Anyone know or have an estimate at what it is?

For example, the E39 M5 brought out in 1998 did a (coastal) acceleration of mid 5's ... 13 years later and at the highveld, is it unrealistic to say - for example - a standard Golf 6 GTI DSG could run next to or very close to it?

I actually dont know. I want to say thats fair, some age and up here the G6 turbo would help.
But I think the m5 unless badly maintained would still win

I think it's all down to the maintenance and km's done on the M5. Think G6 will be the favourite to win this battle if it happens.
This reminded me of the Top Gear episode where Hammond dyno'ed his own Mustang - Result: One very dissapointed Hamster.

Off topic:I know the switch to LRP made a noticable difference on my '90 CLi (Maybe all in my head!!)

In my opinion, I think +-10% drop in power for every 10 years in well maintained cars. Ready to be slaughtered!
