So my new rig will consist of the following,

7870
i5 3570
2x4gb ddr3 1600
Asus motherboard (1 of the latest)
Dvd writer
256gb vertex 4 ssd
Maybe a card reader
Some case fans for ventilation

Looking at maybe getting the 725w coolmaster power supply from prophecy (I think it's R917.24). Any thoughts? Will it be enough?

It will be enough, but I dont know of anyone using that PSU before.

I know the extreme series arent so good, but I see thats the extreme II.

Power-wise, even a good 500 - 600w like Corsair or Sea Sonic is enough to power that rig.

Overkill. Use the calculator Jab linked to and enter your specs. The Antec HCG-620 will probably be more than enough. Plus it's Sea Sonic so a great brand. (Most of the Corsair range are also rebranded Sea Sonic) Coolermaster PSU's arent that well known really.

Edit: I ran the calculation, you only need 424W, even with 20% capacitor aging used. Get a good 500W and you'll have quite a bit of headroom. 600W if you want to add a second graphics card.

The XFX ProSeries 550W @ R699 would be more than good enough for that setup!
If you want to go for dual graphics cards, then I'd recommend a 750W PSU, because the ones below 750W usually don't include enough PEG (PCI-E Graphics) power connectors.

Just take note that the Asus motherboards are pretty expensive for that they offer when compared to ASRock/MSI.
