Hi guys,
Quick question: can I replace the fan in my powersupply with a normal case fan? It look very similar from the outside.

Thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem, assuming it'll fit and has same power rating/ requirements. Why you wanna do that anyway?

Yeah sure, you might have to cut some wires and reconnect some to get the new fan on. The reason for this being that a lot of psu's don't have fan headers for their fans.

Also be very careful as the capacitors can store a lot of power for a long time, so you don't want to be shocking yourself. So don't touch too many things on the pcb and avoid removing it if possible!

Same here. I change my fans at least once a year.

A standard case fan is fine. Just make sure you connet red to red, ect.

Now, my next question is going to draw some sarcastic comments...... but..... is it better to set the fan to suck air in or blow out out?

Airflow is suck air in at front of pc and blow it out the back/top.

I've got 2 fan infront of hdd's (sucking in air), 1 fan at the top of case (blowing out), 2 fans at the top-back behind cpu. (blowing out), 1 fans at the bottom-back (blowing out), and 2 fans in the powersupply blowing out.

Heat rises so it have to go out the top.(and back) :D

Just an update: Replaced the fan in the powersupply - no hassles. The noise from my PC has been reduced by 50% more or less. Now the only thing bothering me now is the northbridge fan…

DAMN! You have enough fans there? I got a couple you could fit in there...somewhere! LOL:D

Yes, they are the same. Do yourself a favour and get a good fan, not your R30 cheapies. One that will remain quiet for a long time.

I got myself a Vizo Muffle Fan http://vizo.com.tw/index.php?main_p...&tab=1&zenid=89bd75ad9bdf58b0ac309963e080a5df - really impressed, absolutely no noise coming from my power supply. They go for about R70 each.

Regarding my Northbridge cooler fan, I will not be able to replace it because any bigger fan will obstruct my graphics card – so I am stuck with that one. The only solution I can think of is to buy a fan speed controller, connect it up an turn the revs down. I was thinking something like this: http://www.vantecusa.com/p_nxp_201.html . With this I will be able to control all my fans in my PC and it is just R150. Are there any other suggestions?

Man, your PC must be horribly noisy :(

I have 3 Fans in my PC that do the job. No problems with heat or noise. Then again, my mobo is one of those "Cool 'n Quiet" mobo's from ASUS, but still. Why so many fans?

I'm now offically outa mouting space for the fans. Sounds like a airplane when it starts up. (one of the top back fans is noisy)(disconnected it):D

Still use all the fans in summer when i'm in kuruman. Damm it gets hot there.
