sorry I am new to this

I have just placed an online order for an adsl line from telkom. what is a power surge unit and is it essential? also, does it really matter which adsl modem I get? I am not prepared to spend 1000 bucks on one. also, what is the difference between a usb and an ethernet modem and does it affect reliability/performance. I know it affects price :)

Err on the side of caution and ensure you have a surge protection device.
Don't buy the Telkom-offered units - get a 'router' modem that plugs into a
network card on your PC or into a switch (for use if you have more than one
computer), i.e. not a USB unit. Billion, Linksys or DLink in no particular order
all have suitable units, though some forumites have preferences - I have none.
Reliability/performance is very much a function of the quality of the line, IMHO,
and not really your connectivity device in the majority of cases. Other forumites
would be able to provide greater technical guidance...

I would also advise to get a power/surge protection unit. You can get this at Jump.co.za.

For a modem, have a look at the Billion 5102 (4-ports) or 5102S (Single port)
