I have automations to switch to grid charge - so can delay. But yea not every inverter can.

It depends on usage. I switch to batteries at 8pm and normally last all the way till the morning when the sun comes up. However, if there is stage 6 and there are clouds forecast for the next morning, I charge from grid when LS ends, during the night - rather pay little more and have power in the morning, then wait for the sun.

So it's very much a depends kinda situation.

We had LS at 4am - grid is still down now. But I had plenty of battery left and there are no clouds. So I have not used the grid since 8pm last night.

Home Assist + MQTT events from the inverter. I get notifications to my phone and it sends WhatsApp messages to the wife to tell her when the grid dies and when we have LS, etc.

Also switch inverter to grid charge under certain conditions - eg if there is stage 6 LS and it's the middle of the night, etc - it will switch to grid charge automatically.

My Home Assistant setup knows if grid is down due to LS or a fault. So I run automations based on that.

I normally do a top up of about 2 hours a day before my load shedding stint, so if it's 8pm I'll use it during peak, if it's 10pm I'll top up from 8 to 10. If it's really cloudy I'll run most of the day on Eskom.

How do you get MQTT events out of the inverter without something like Solar assistant? Got a link or something? I assume you have a Sunsynk/Deye?

Nope, a cheap Kodak Inverter, connected to a raspberry PI that runs a bit of software called ICC - which then I connect Home Assistant to get the MQTT messages
