I see from this very old tweet that Kusile Unit 5 will be synchronised in July (+700MW) which is actually pretty good news when we are in desperate times...

And having a single majority party in control is an anomaly; we're setup for coalition governments and should have been that way all along.
We will never have a single major party in control again in SA; coalitions for the foreseeable future.

Exactly why I say people touting it as if its some magical meaning.
'The availability factor of a power plant is the amount of time that it is able to produce electricity over a certain period, divided by the amount of the time in the period. The availability factor should not be confused with the capacity factor. The capacity factor for a given period can never exceed the availability factor for the same period. So, since things have some how magically gotten better and we're not been told the grid is about to explode... I might not leave my house in pure "backup mode" whilst I am away for three week in July s I was planning to - and just leave the solar do its thing.

As much as we need coalitions now, hope you are wrong, they don't have a great track record either. We need some other party with half a decent agenda to get off their butt.

Priapus is right though - the standard in European nations with a PR system is coalitions. The winning party usually achieves between 25 - 35% of the vote. Long gone are the days that any party can grab the attention of 50% + 1 in Europe.

I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar I am right on this. All the data points towards it and there has been extensive analysis around the voting / election trends.
ANC has fallen so much that it simply won't get a majority and opposition parties have not offered a convincing alternative to really challenge the ANC for the top spot. Just as we have in Germany with their coalitions - we will have the same here, going forward.
Best case for us next year is ANC/DA coalition; hate the idea or love it - but it's better than the alternative.
The Europeans have this model for ages now - it's just how PR systems work. We should never have had a majority party in control.

And South Africa is maturing in this direction now. We took our time, but we're at that point now.
Here we've got a majority that's based on old (fading) loyalties, after which we'll be left with massive amounts of minorities only (if the Zulus don't get self-organised) so agree. But this isn't Europe, still hopeful that single minded sensible politics is slightly possible.
Look at Italy, long term coalition systems aren't a good idea either. Africa can only make it worse

My friend came back from Italy about a month ago, her, her dog and her EU passport booked their tickets back to Italy this morning and its a one way flight.
She said its cheaper in Italy than here, she got an apartment with 24/7 power, gas, internet and water for the same price as a 1 bedroom 1 bath in CT (yea CT is more expensive) but she's choosing the safe life over Africa...

Funny that you bring up loyalties as to the reason the ANC stays in power. Data says otherwise. People like to say the average ANC voter is stupid; however Most of them vote based on their living conditions. We saw that after '94 the ANC voter share improved a lot - and arguably so, so did their living conditions. Life in SA had gotten better for many people post '94.
However, since the Zuma era, life has gotten far worse and as that has happened, so has the ANC voter share started to drop off. Remember, once upon a time, the ANC had a 2/3 majority in this country. Now we are wondering if they'll even make 50%.
All attributed to people not voting for them because their lives have gotten substantially worse and not voting for the other parties because they are not convincing enough to the average ANC voter.
A coalition national government is coming - there is no stopping that.
There's lots of theories and published "facts" on the subject. One that made most sense to me, and others here, was that it had been determined that most ANC votes are due to bullying by (paid off?) village chiefs and the like of the voters, and particularly in KZN.
And the cause of the change to anti-ANC? Who knows, but there's only so much abuse people will put up with, even under threat, so I suspect we're seeing a domino effect.
Anything is better than here, just about.
