If you refer to the registration, that's free yes. But there is still the grid connection fee even if you use 0kWh
Yes but that's not a green tax, we have that here in JHB as well and it's almost 900 bucks. Though luckily it's only for postpaid

It's R185 exc VAT in CPT and applies to any house that's worth more than R1m, whether postpaid or prepaid -- tariffs are the same (unless you are able to claim indigent relief + house under R1m)

Sounds like they are charging you around what long term finance would cost on a 5kw battery...which they can get away with under the circumstances of them being your battery. What rate does one get as a feed in kwh tarrif in cpt these days? Probably the same as what the metro pays on average for a bulk unit from eskom...which also isn't that unfair. Solar viability is not subsidised around these parts it seems. It has to compete and it therefor struggles.

So still not a green tax as per that socialism moaner :)

@Paulsie , with sabotage, and now diesel skimping and hidden extra maintenance going on it makes no difference anyway, anc does what it wants.

But do agree, let's try where it's sensible to.

They charge it to everyone, nothing to do with having a battery or solar...

It has to compete and it therefore struggles.
Solar does have to compete, it doesn't struggle.

Solar costs around R20/watt to install...
In most of the country it can generate around effective 4.5 hours per day in most of SA (average over the year). So over a year you get 1650 hours per year.

Install 5kW and you'll pay about R100,000 for the solar (batteries are more but are for load shedding primarily nowadays), and get 8,250kWh in a year.
Panels are likely guaranteed for at least 10 years so 80,000kWh for R100,000... That's only R1.25/kWh!*

CoCT is charging R2.60 to R3.60 (over 600kWh).
It's competing... With no subsidies!
Just don't expect them/ rate payers to pay for it!

The reason it doesn't make sense nowadays is nothing to do with solar, but to do with demand. If you don't use power during the day, then those kWh will be wasted / fed back at <R1/kWh...

*[Did about 5 versions of the above making the assumptions softer and softer and softer... Could be R10/watt, can be 5 hours/day making it 50c/kWh]

No you can't, cpt doesn't charge a fee, installers rip people off
I compared the cost of solar in CPT to another city. I can confirm, CPT has a solar tax problem, and the difference can clearly be seen by just driving around and looking at roofs. Even though CPT has people with more money than the other city, I estimate uptake in CPT to be be about 10 times less!

You do realize that they are not explicitly calling the "solar tariffs" "green tax"? You are falling for their word play. The other city had no concept of solar tariffs, in fact, the other city is subsidizing solar houses to pay lower per kwh than normal rates.

Sorry CPT, but you are getting screwed in terms of solar costs. Lets call it what it really is: GREEN TAX!
