Following the Eskom press conference on News24, permanent stage 2/3 LS is planned (,at least in the evenings) in order for maintenance to be done. Obviously not ideal but it's evident one factor of our current predicament is zero maintenance during the Molefe/Koko years, so this is probably the best option in the *current circumstances* (please don't read this as defending Eskom / LS - I'm just putting forward views based on the current situation). We need to be realistic here, not operate in a world that does not exist.

Not surprised, to be honest. They don't have any other choice.

How do we even know they are actually doing any maintenance?
The planned maintenance portion I'm guessing? Last figure I saw on a press release was around 5.7GW which is a fairly large figure (remember it was 8GW during the festive season). Typically we will see that figure decrease to as low as 2GW during winter.

According to the reports, the emergency meetings held this week were unable to come up with any new quick-fix solutions to the load shedding crisis, instead leaning on previous long-term plans to boost grid capacity over time.

Response from the meetings was that the president’s plans would only be useful now if they had been announced three years ago. Broadly, the new plan – which is the old plan – is three phases:
  1. Do urgent maintenance to coal-powered power stations
  2. Build new capacity
  3. Remove regulatory hurdles
The only thing that can be done in the near term is to provide Eskom with more diesel for its open-cycle gas turbines and take on the criminal syndicates, which are exacerbating, if not directly causing, the energy crisis through vandalism, theft and acts of sabotage.

So point one we know will only help a little, two will take a decades or more, three is unlikely with a communist party and they won't fight criminal syndicates because those are their family/buddies.
