Most of the time Botswana is actually exporting a small amount to SA. The capacity of their power stations is enough for local demand, but the reliability of the Morupule power stations that were built by the Chinese has been terrible (scandals in the vein of Medupi, Kusile etc). At one point they almost thought of scrapping them, lots of articles on the internet, but most of the major issues have been sorted out now, so they hobble along.Eskom probably dropped the ball with their exports causing their local generation to trip would be my guess because they don’t have a loadshedding schedule to follow afaik.
Botswana hit by blackout earlier on Monday | Business
A "grid disturbance" caused an outage of both Morupule A and B power plants and also hit the transmission power line that connects Botswana to South Africa.
