Most of the time Botswana is actually exporting a small amount to SA. The capacity of their power stations is enough for local demand, but the reliability of the Morupule power stations that were built by the Chinese has been terrible (scandals in the vein of Medupi, Kusile etc). At one point they almost thought of scrapping them, lots of articles on the internet, but most of the major issues have been sorted out now, so they hobble along.

A "grid disturbance" caused an outage of both Morupule A and B power plants and also hit the transmission power line that connects Botswana to South Africa.

Their demand is actually 2.6GWh so, his numbers are conservative. They've worked to wean themselves off of Eskom. They had some Chinese issues with increasing the capacity of their one plant from 300 to 600, but I think those issues got sorted.

Apparently a grid disturbance, but here is the interesting bit
Botswana was exporting 60MW of power at the time. Last year, Botswana offered to sell Eskom off-peak generated electricity. However, the country also still imports electricity from Zambia and South Africa amid performance problems at Morupule.

So actually we were importing from them, wonder if we caused it

Also going into winter something that people ignore is, Gas heaters should only be used in ventilated spaces.
Closing all windows and doors while using gas, is a recipe for disaster.

Fire consumes oxygen even if it uses gas for fuel.

They go through periods where they have it, they have not had it for a while but about 2 months ago they went through about a week of Loadshedding...

We sell products to companies in Botswana and we had a meeting with the one wholesaler who cancelled the day before saying due to loadshedding they couldn't make things work.
