I'm the only person in my household, and my parents taught me to be conservative growing up. Don't dare leave lights on if you're not in the room.

I grew up with no power.... well we had Power from 6-8 but the rest of the time it was gas and and.
I will switch on all my lights even when I am not at home :P

My pet peeve is when someone tells me to switch them off when I am paying for it.

Make more power dammit, my wallet should decide when I start switching off not external factors.

Yup pretty much this, as people didn't have strict cooking times so they cooked and did what they wanted when they wanted.
Interestingly studies during 2020 showed that consumption in households did go up from 8 to 30% due to work from home, worldwide demand went down 3.5% and some places demand dropped 30%. But yeah peaks kind of didn't happen as often.

Inflation starting to increase, food costs going up and up weekly, exchange rate ffed, no stable power. It's collapsed
Certainly well on its way, except if drastic measures are taken which is highly unlikely so far.

@semaphore think of our downgrade to junk status, now already old news..

Hardly unique to SA only in this current climate.

Junk was old news one day after it happened.

SA is 1.22m2 km. Please don't assume that your experience is universal. Areas with heavy, constant rainfall and/or cloud cover might require one. Hospitals, Hotels, BnBs, etc might also need.

Also, how about direct you anger at the lack of supply. When we start fighting one another, the powers-that-be win, as they're exempt from our voices.
Cope bro, cope.

In this country, agreed. But in general we do have to learn new balance, too much being consumed.
No, I'm not a greenie if you recall, just a realist. The mad plastic oceans pollution for instance is very real.

You and my dad would be at each other's throats. You didn't even leave the room yet: "Seun, is die ligte af?"

This is how it's worked out
Demand=33 841-6376-447 (ILS)=27018
Supply=25 636+OCTGs (148x14)+250 from the others + 1019 from IPP=28977
There with just load shedding + OCGTS demand was met
Not a great buffer but still sort of one if you throw in the wind.
So you're basically saying Monday evening's 8205 MW shortfall doesn't take into account the renewables/IPP's?

But hasn't it always been the case that renewables don't get factored in because of their unreliable/variable output and the fact that it is evening peak?

So even if we had sufficient wind/solar, it would still have necessitated level 9 load shedding (in the absence of LC) due to the unreliability of renewables.

No it doesn't take into account the renewables, never has. Yes even if we had sufficient renewables it would not count against lowering load shedding, due to it's unreliable nature.

Much harder to rig the vote here, too many parties monitoring each other. We do even better than the US with that IMO.
This is the case whilst the ANC are still in power. The problems (and rigging) generally comes when they start to lose their grip... that will be the real test of our democracy.

Oh they will try hard to trip it up, no doubt about that.

I grew up with that, that is why I am soooooo against it. Every time I came to JHB to visit my parents all I heard was switch off X and Y.

Now Its MY power and I will switch it when I feel like it.

Doesn't need much to rig:
