What I meant was, There Is Another Offering Other Than Telkom's ADSL and Sentech's mywireless. Its Called PowerBAnd. I Just Read About It And Was Wondering If Someone Could Check IT OUt. It's Only R399 A month

ok. There's a catch to Powerband's deal. Firstly, you need 10 conjoining(side-by-side) houses to achieve a R399 a month deal. Basically, it's a 640k satellite connection shared among 10 people which brings it down to a 64k(minimum) line per user. They do however allow you to split the connection among fewer people making the monthly cost increase. This product is mainly aimed at housing complexes or enterprises though. MyWireless is the shiznit :)

The other thing that seems quite interesting is that they seem to be implying networking the units using PLC, I guess thats why it can only be shared within a complex, (individual power box for complex).
What I don't understand, is how this type of connection is legal, I spoke to a guy at ICASA about the legalities of wireless, or a regular UTP network connecting units of a complex, residential or business 2 weeks ago, and he said that for the next few months, its an absolute NONO!
Unless one were to use sentech or telkom infrastructure for the network.
Maybe thats why the only viable option is PLC, I would love to see such a network in action.

The offerings are based on the services provided by Sentech, Africa’s leader in Satellite communications, under its multimedia licence.

Thats defenitly not the mouth of the horse where that came from.

An office block or block of flats can wire themselves with cat5 as they please. That has always been legal.

I'm not so sure about that. For example, if you own the floor of the building you're on, and someone owns the floor above you, running CAT5 to the floor above you is illegal afaik.

mithrandi, That would make POSIX, JINX and about 100 other places (which Telkom shares buildings with afaik) illegal [;)].

You can install cat 5 cable wherever you want to,many companys went this way when they installed their own PABX systems, these were done by plessey, siemens, phillips. The only problem at the time was all internal cabling was the client resposibility and not Telkoms.
So you could cable a whole building if you wanted to.
You just couldnt make use of Telkoms cable and they not use yours, although they could be running side by side.

Hi freeek,

They only resell Sentech services, so they are not a new or unique company.

I understood the licensing 'issue' was when the signal (or CAT 5 cable) crossed a municiple boundry.

If, for example, the road in the 'complex' was a municiple road (even though there is/was a boom), you would require a license (aka use telkom) to get signal from the one side to the other.

If you talk to the folks from telkom, they suggest that this is irrespective of frequency. The joke is that you should in effect pay telkom should you shout to someone across a municiple boundry.

Where the road (or bricks in the case of floors in a building) is privately owned you are permitted to have a communication method, provided it does not exceed the power output as per ICASA.
