Hi guys,

Has anyone here used a powerline adapter before - it uses your powerline to create an ethernet network. So you connect your modem or router to the adapter which plugs into an electricity outlet in your wall and then you get another one for the device u want to connect.

Can anyone tell me anything about their performance and where to buy one?

Thanks!
Ushir

Performance speeds achievable over your power lines are either "up to 14Mbps", or "up to 85Mbps" or "up to 200Mbps" depending on the features of the Powerline AP devices.

Performance speeds of Wi-Fi on these Powerline AP devices are either "up to 54Mbps", or "up to 108Mbps" or "up to 125Mbps" again depending on the features of the devices.

Note that some Powerline AP devices don't have an Ethernet/USB port, so if your router doesn't feature WDS functionality you will not easily establish a network connection.

Similarly, some Powerline devices don't feature Wi-Fi functionality.

I have the Edimax homeplugs - the one up to 200MBPS. I managed to get a very good price on them, and bought 4.

They are very handy. I use them to stream video content from my PC to my Popcornhour and to my Xbox in the lounge. The other 2 are used to connect to the internet, from PC's in others rooms in the house.

Never had any problems, they basically plug in and connect - could not be easier. They come with software which you can use to determine connection quality and speed. Mine are listed as "fair" - and run rather smootly.

I purchased a pair of the 85Mbps kind about a year ago... not at the office atm so can't remember what make/model and where we purchased.
I got it to use between two offices, the guys werent happy with the wireless... too slow.
These things seem to work well enough... eerie how they work ... just plug into the wall socket one side put LAN cable to ur pc/switch, same on other side.
U can use the software to check reception/speeds.
As far as I know they have to be on the same power grid to work properly.

same power grid.... I understand it to mean same db board, so in the same house, or same building, not two different buildings with their own separate power circuits.
I guess then the connection is poor, or not at all.
I tried at the office between 2 different buildings, with their own power inputs, and it didn't work, in another 2 buildings connection was poor.... maybe the distance was too far.

I tested the dlink adapters (not sure of the exact model name), and was really unhappy with the performance. when connected to the same plug (one of those 5 socket jobs) i was getting around 40-50mbps transfer speeds. when i then tried connecting one on one side of the house, and the other on the other side, speeds dropped like a brick (somewhere in the region of 2-3mbps). tried streaming video over the connection, but no luck.
