Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to transfer a DSL signal using powerline adapter? (I suspect I know the answer to this question, but hoping someone can help).

Hi,

Regards,

I suspect you need to explain more fully what you are trying to do.

Trying to relay raw ADSL signalling over powerline is unlikely to work, much as conveying electricity through a water pipe is not going to be terribly effective (or vice versa, if you are inclined to nitpick :-) ).

However, if you connect your ADSL modem and a powerline adapter using e.g. a crossover cable (if required, or a plain ethernet cable otherwise), and then place another powerline adapter and a wifi AP or switch elsewhere, there is no reason this should not work.

That would be:

[phone line] -- ADSL signalling -- [ADSL modem] -- ethernet -- [PLA] -- Power line signalling -- [PLA] -- ethernet -- [whatever]

Thanks for the reply.

What I was trying to ask is something similar to:

[phone line] -- ADSL signalling -- [PLA] -- Power line signalling -- [PLA] -- [ADSL modem] -- ethernet -- [whatever]

There is this item:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/dect-wireless-phone-line-extender-a82fy

Which does the above for the phone line but not the ADSL signal; I was wondering if there is something equivalent.

I'd suggest sticking with the scheme that I laid out. You can either choose to let the ADSL modem setup the PPPoE connection, and hand out IP addresses using DHCP, etc, or else put it in bridging mode, and let a WAN router on the other side of the PLA pair establish the PPPoE connection to the ISP. Either way, you would be able to get it to work.

You would end up with either of the two scenarios:

1. [phone line] -- ADSL signalling -- [ADSL modem establishes PPPoE connection, hands out routes and leases to other devices] -- ethernet -- [PLA] -- Power line signalling -- [PLA] -- ethernet -- [whatever]

2. [phone line] -- ADSL signalling -- [ADSL modem in bridge mode] -- ethernet -- [PLA] -- Power line signalling -- [PLA] -- ethernet -- [WAN router, establishes PPPoE connection, hands out routes and DHCP leases, wifi AP, etc] -- ethernet -- [other devices]

I doubt very much that you'd get what you are suggesting to work. And to be honest, I'm struggling to understand your reasoning as to why you want to do it that way.

:-) I don't want my modem in the kitchen...it looks untidy
