Powersupply for 4870 Crossfire

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if you can give me some advice on CrossFire. I have a Gigabyte Odin 720w true power PSU and was wondering if it can handle 2 4870's in Crossfire. I've never delt with SLI or Crossfire so my knowledge is limited on it.

I don't really want to upgrade my PSU due to budget, will only if I really have to at a later stage.

Will the 720w be able to handle the rest of my PC?

AMD Phenom 9950 OC 3.0Ghz
4GB Transcend DDR2 800 RAM
Biostar 790GX A2+
1x 1TB WD HDD SATA2
2X 500GB WD HDD SATA2
Sony DVD Writer
Sapphire 4870

Yes, just dedicate one 12v rail to each card.

You'll also need 2 more 6-pin power converters.
 
Ok thanks for the info. So basically I just put the 12v Rails into 1 of the PCIE connector ports from the PSU? I have 2 6 pin-power connecters(molex-pcie connecter), I connect thoseto Molex on the PSU into the 2nd PCIE port on each card?



Edit: Thanks everyone for the info! I checked and it said roughly 665W which is still ok.

Off to get me a XFX 4870! :D

Some of these PSU calculators aren't that accurate. Sometimes they are bias to PSU companies to make you buy their products.
I would definitely go with the 660-665W. That seems about right.
Sometimes its not about the higher wattage, but quality PSU. Like you can have an el' cheapo 1000W PSU that won't last long and damage your system in the long run. Or you can have a quality 700W PSU that will still power your system and last you longer.
 
Ok, I getcha, as long as mine doesn't damage anything in the long run. ;)
 
Your power supply will definitely work. Even ati say you only need a 600watt.

What I heard is that "PC power" makes really good Power PSU's cause they use a single 12v rail. I heard that 1 single rail provides better power.

Its not just the 12v rail...PCpower & cooling PSU are almost industrial grade power supplies with very "clean" stable power:D

I guess you can say that, correct me if I'm wrong, the multiple +12V rails splits the amperage (A) across the multiple rails. While this can provide power to dmore devices, the Amp is split and thus offers less "solid" power to each device. For example if you have 60A this would be split over the +12V rails with 30A each. Whereas the single rails will offer a solid 60A over the single rail.
Now I've read somewhere that having mutliple rails is good for balance and sharing of power but most likely benefit 1000W+ PSU. So in a sense you are right where single rails could be better and also there are not a lot of mobo's that support multiple rails (again correct me if I'm wrong).
