Hi,

I am having a problem getting Telkom to assist with a connection problem and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Last week I started having a problem getting my router (Billion 7300A) to establish a PPP connection. ADSL line synch is fine and the username and passwords (of both the SAIX accounts I tried) are correct and active but the router seems unable to establish the PPP session. The router logs just say "Connection failed" with no indication of a reason.

I have phoned Telkom a few times and they say there is no problem with either the ADSL line or the Rosebank DSLAM I am connecting to (from Illovo). They also do not appear to have any mechanism for escalating the call to a technician.

A friend that stays quite close is having exactly the same problem and yet Telkom assures me there is no problem. I have upgraded the router firmware, logged a call on the Telkom support website, emailed their support address, and phoned the helpdesk multiple times all to no avail.

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks,
Craig

No PPP

Hi. I have been experiencing similar problems with my telkom router as well. Try disconnecting the power from your router and the wall power plug for a minute or so, (and for kicks) your telephone line that connects to the router surge protector and telephone line socket.

I believe that due a power surge the surge protector that comes with most routers does not reset, and probably has a weak current or voltage, thereby not allowing the data to flow correctly. This is just my opinion gained from actually "pulling the plug" on the router(especially the surge protector) and refreshing the flow of electricity.

I hope it works for you.

I've had this problem once or twice, usually after a bad storm.

I phoned Telkom and they fixed it by doing a reset on my line, or something like that. ;)

Good luck and hope you find a solution :)

I've been having the same problem since yesterday.

Try disconnecting the power from your router and the wall power plug for a minute or so, (and for kicks) your telephone line that connects to the router surge protector and telephone line socket.

I'm sure I've tried this, but will rather try it again before phoning telkom.

Another possible solution

Hi again. The solution that I had posted earlier in this thread was not continously working. It is possible that we may be placing the modem on the top of our computer cases that is causing the problem as well. I've always kept my modem on my CPU case close to the power supply. I moved it away from the PSU and Eureka! it connects to the net first time everytime. It could be the magnetic field created from the PSU that prevents it from functioning correctly.

Give it a try.It may work for you.
