PPPD settings for Vodacom? (or others) (on Linux without Modem/Network Manager)

Modem/Network manager aren't ready for prime time. (it worked for me with only one of my modems then stopped working completely)
I'm working on connecting with PPPD (which is said to be fast and rock-solid)
Does anyone know what PPPD settings are required for Vodacom?

I followed this guide to setting up PPPD for mobile broadband connections.

Okay I take back everything I said about "Modem/Network manager not being ready for prime time".
I was really just echo'ing what I've read.
Both of my E220 or my E173 Huawei dongles work instantly and effortlessly when plugged into a USB2 port.

I've wasted almost the entire day because Huawei dongles aren't compatible with USB3 ports. I didn't realize I was plugging into a USB3 port. I could scream. But whats the point.

$#$*&*# computers.
