Hi guys,
does anybody know if there is an alternative for Windows 2000 to Telkom's PPPOE client for connecting to ADSL?
The problem is that in order to connect I first have to stop my DHCP server and disable my routing service which I use for NAT. If either of the two are runnning, the IP address from Telkom doesn't properly bind to the adapter. Any since Telkom disconnects my IP address every 24h, that's a bit of a pain.
Any ideas?
Thanks

you'll prolly not like my suggestion ... get an old box and install a linux based firewall solution. I use smoothwall and have no problems at all. Another alternatvie to smoothwall is ipcop, which I have yet to play around with. This way you're protecting your internal network/single computer and gain stability at the same time.

Any1 noticed how many people with ADSL have open shares???

my 2c worth.

Personally I think the windows Telkom's PPPOE is a load of crap because with me it's like installing one ugly buggy thing on my PC that if I can remember correctly messes up my windows.

The best solution I think is a linux machine that handles the internet access. You just need an old PC. You first need to set up the networking of the box. There are probable a variaty of stuff you can use. After you have the networking of the box going use IP Masquarading - I think it's the easiest to set up.

The internet is full of howto's and docs for IP Mascquarading (can't remember the spelling).

There is another utility that you can use, it even sets settings like rwin and all that automatically for you. Just can't remember what it's called, will check at home tonight and let you know. I have have bee using it since getting my dsl connection, even speeds it up a bit.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was afraid you were going to tell me that. Installed Linux once. Requires me to RTFM too much. So I erased it again. Windows may be crap - but at least any idiot can run it [;)].
Louiss, if you can give me some more info on that utility, much appreciated.
Cheers.

Sorry paf, been too nackered the last two days to even look at PC at home. Will post it for you over the weekend.

Telkom advised me to go to www.carricksolutions.com to download different PPPoE clients from there - maybe this helps

Thanks again to everyone and special thanks to kb. That RASPPPOE client really did it. No more problems with DHCP, Router Manager works perfectly AND I have dial-on-demand now.
I deleted the crappy Telkom client with the greatest pleasure.

I've been using http://www.raspppoe.com on W2K since Nov 2002, I generally get sub 20 pings in CS with it. It has never failed me and is the simplest thing to install if you follow the setup guide step by step. Some friends have tried it on WIN XP and found no real benefit, so W2K with SP3/4 is the best way to go for gaming.
I also host a WWW/FTP/Mail/PROXY server off it and its never failed. [8D]
