Hi all,

My first post on MyADSL so still very newbie to all this. I ordered my ASDL 192 line from Telkom yesterday. I specified the self install option to save myself the R404 cost. Now I am just doing my homework before I start and before they get me hooked up (Christmas is comming too).

Now I remember from a while back when I installed an extension line for a second phone that I only have two of the possible six wires in the wall connected to make my phone work (which is the norm I assume). Now my question is, is this a possible problem for ASDL? If so where can I get a socket that handles four wires? And which wires must be wired up how? Should I rather get a techie?

Many thanks,
Erick

No problemo. That is the beauty of ADSL, it uses the existing one-pair twisted copper loop to enable high speed data transfers.

When you receive the ADSL modem, simply connect it to the wall jack using a standard RJ11 plug. Your modem should come bundled with all cables needed.

Just remember to connect all analog telephones and fax machines on the same line using a Telkom POTS filter. Otherwise you will hear strange noises on the telephone when connected to the internet.

Magic :D

Thanks Franna! Yes I will be ordering my Microfilter with my ADSL modem. Just uncertail whether to wait for Telkom to do the exchange bit before I buy my ADSL router modem or to buy it now already and have it ready when my ADSL becomes available.

Cheers,
Erick

I agree with waiting for the exchange part first before buying the modem. Telkom can sometimes take up to two months to do the installation.

Try to call them every couple of days to ensure they do not forget about you. If luck is on your side you might get father christmas coming to your home in a Telkom van.

Be glad you went for the SIO!

Normaly after everything is done the techie still had to come to your house! And that can take some time esp over christmas!

I ordered the SIO and the guy still came to my house and plug in his laptop and phoned HQ and bang! R404 later!
