I went into a local Vodacom store last week to get a new pre-paid sim card for a spare phone I have. Took in all the required docs and asked the staff member there to help me. He disappeared in the back, came out with a sealed starter pack and put it in a bag for me. I offered him my docs for the RICA and he said it wasn't required as the sim had been pre-RICA'd. The number was written on the inside of the sealed pack. I then asked him how much and he said there was no charge. I walked out of the store with a sim card that works and isn't in any way registered to me.

Wait, what?

Can anybody explain what just happened?

You actually went into a Paki shop incorrectly branded as a Vodacom shop?

Either way, pure awesome. RICA is proper BS and does F All for safety and security of this country.

No, genuine Vodacom shop that has been in operation for years in a major Durban mall.
These stores are not run by Vodacom, they are privately owned and run.

We should really be reporting these instances. For one they are using some poor dude's ID number to RICA these SIM's. Should the government, legally, use the RICA act, the person who's ID number was used could be arrested.

BTW it could even be your ID number used to RICA many SIMs. Imagine you are getting ready to board a flight with your family for that once in a lifetime holiday, and you get hauled off and have to spend a few days in a different type of hotel, with someone that is not your spouse.

Guy is probably doubling up as a Rica agent for other simcard distributors like qmart, smartcall or awesim.

You get paid R25 per activation so can be lucrative to sell pre rica simcards to foreign nationals.

Problem is networks limit it to 100 sims per id number so people throwing away documents with their id number on will find they now have hundreds of simcards registered on their name.

Hopefully rica will come to an end soon after the court ruling.

Funny you should mention that, when we cancelled our Telkom contract they asked why we had 14 sim cards registered to my wife's ID. Only one of them was actually ours. So how are these criminals doing this and getting away with it?

Well I'm a registered rica agent got like 300+ simcards. These sim distributors rely on the honestly of the tica agent. What info we put in is what is captured so I can capture completely fake info and the rica will go through. When you get caught they disable your rica agent account. No repercussions.

So how can I find out who this number is registered to?

No idea maybe get it from the network but would be difficult.

If you want to keep the number but you don't know who it's registered too and want it registered with your details then porting it is your only option.

Rica new network sim with your details then sms to port.

To do change of ownership you would need the persons id number then you can do a change of ownership.

I'm on telkom prepaid and noticed on the portal that there are three extra numbers I don't remember taking. Will go in store and cancel them in case Telkom are registering people on my details.

I bought a SIM card at the spaza shop but I lost it how do I Rica the card

Not sure what system you use but the proper Vodacom system we use is actually linked to DHA. If we put a first name in that does not match the ID number entered it will give a error. Cant just put random sh*t in there.
