Prebuilt Windows and Office... Upgrade to SSD

Hi guys

so im upgrading a laptop to a SSD however the prebuilt in windows and keys are on the old HDD together with the office setup
how would i keep those versions of windows on the new SSD ? do i use the media creation tool on the old HDD first

I recently did this on two machines.

Macrium reflect works very well. You first need to get both disks connected to the old machine.

Back in the day I run IT for a big architectural company. There were about 200 Dell pc's. There were only about 3 models. I used to created images for them. Install windows, Office and some other software. Then create an image using Acronis. When a person left or had a problem with their pc we would dump an image onto the hard drive, do any updates, make a new image and then put them back on the network. This way my images were kept upto date for the next pc.

Not much different for a home pc. When you get it new or do a clean install just update all the software and make an image. If you ever need to rebuild, more than half the work is done. No need to worry about activating software, getting drivers, and some of the updates are done for you.

Back in the day (talking like 2008 or so) when I was a junior I had to do the same with hundreds of HP machines, I was like screw it not gonna happen one by one then I was looking into PXE booting, with a bit of hackery I got PXE boot to boot all PCs into Norton Ghost which then ghosted the image on all the pcs at once...... before me it would take a junior days if not weeks to do one by one which was the way things were done, that PXE boot thing probably got me promoted to team lead shortly after

Yes. It makes a direct sector by sector clone of the disk.

Once you boot off the new disk, your computer doesn't know the difference.
