Hello Guys,

I just had a PM that "sparked" off this reply - thought I would post it here along with some more questions.... :)

Q) Why Does Windows use GPRS/3G/HSDPA while Linux is "forced" to 3G/HSDPA?

A) Windows uses the preferred profiles where the default in Linux is forced. The preferred profiles are also in the Linux config.

Q) What does preferred mean to the modem/device ?

A) If the 3G/HSDPA network is avail. the modem will use it. If it becomes too weak to be used or is not avail at the start of the connection the modem will downgrade the connection to a GPRS connection. Now - this is where the fun begins (and maybe Vodacom3G and the boys can confirm this one)

When I was still playing with the E620 I noticed that the card can go back up to 3G but *only* if the card goes into idle mode. This is not to be confused with a modem "upgrading" the connection to HSDPA.

HSDPA is "just" an extension of the 3G network so the modem/device can switch between the two "as and how" it pleases. Normally the modems/devices are pretty good about it and will switch when you start pulling traffic.

Hope that give some insight to some things :)

Laterz !
