prepaid cell package for USA

so we'll be embarking on an 80 travel and adventure of the USA soon

any recommendations and advice on a decent cellphone carrier? Verizon? AT&T? T-Mobile?

- I'll take my za Galaxy S3 with (hoping it'll work right?)

not much talk time needed but would need to have a decent 3g/4g data package.

Have a look at http://mrsimcard.com/. I used them last year and they provided excellent service. I had unlimited US calls, unlimited worldwide SMS, and unlimited data for about $60. If you pop them an e-mail with your requirements, they will suggest the best option.
