Just some feedback to everyone who took interest:
They sent 2 representatives along with a member of the complex management to meet with me and discuss the charges. They explained that Eskom has varying rates and the solar geysers are drawing backup current that is not metered. Fair enough, I understand that I need to pay for my geysers unmetered usage.
According to the receipts and data they produced: Eskom would send a bill for around R100k for the entire complexes usage, which was around 52 000 kWh. (This is during July winter period). However, the metered usage of all tenants only adds up to around 15 000 kWh. Meaning that they need to recoup their costs from 15 000 kWh measured usage to pay a R100k bill, so they take the easiest way and simply slap on a multipier of 7.58 to achieve this. Sounds good to the layman, but it is incredibly unfair to the end users freedom of choice to use electricity since that multiplier doesn't discriminate what appliances are being used nor does it stop once their "target" has been reached. If I decide to fire up my Playstation for leisure or my high-end PC and server for work, which would normally inflate my bill only marginally, I now have to incur 100's of rands in costs since the flate excessive rate never ceases. When I asked why we can't keep the tariffs at say R2 per unit and then bill me for the remaining unmetered usage, the answers I got that it was "too much admin" and that "it will come to the same thing" or the property owners "won't go for that". It seems CitiQ and the property managers are more concerned with reducing their workload by dictating how you should live instead of providing fair solutions.
