Hi,

We have prepaid electricity STSS in the complex and the cost per unit kwh increased by 12% in the past month. We use about R500 a month in summer and about R700 in winter. We usually recharge R300 each time and gives 200kwh, however this past week we recharge R300 and only gave 178.5kwh.

Thus now effectively we're paying R1.69 per unit kwh. Anyone else using prepaid electricity and how much their unit per kwh costs?

I have another unit which the electricity rate (not prepaid) is around R1.05 ~ R1.10 per unit kwh which is the normal rate that is applied by COJ. Is there a regulatory body (email address) that I can lodge a complaint/investigation against STSS?

Regards

Prepaid vendors are not allowed to charge more than the COJ tariff as far as I know.

Tariffs did increase by 13% on one June, however- but you seem to be paying too much.

CoJ prepaid tariff is 105.75c plus vat, for the first 500kwh per month, so R1.205

Wonder which area pays the highest in the country.

If anyone in Table View reads this - I'd really like to know what prices you guys are paying...

What i can tell you is if you buy R500 at the beginning of the month and R500 on about the 20th, you get half the units as at the beginning of the month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You cannot buy R1000 at the start either.

ESKOM are thieves and scoundrels. They ripping us off with their policies.

Inclining block tariffs.
The more you use, the more you pay. So buy smart and let the system work for you.
If you use 900kwh per month in summer and 1100 in winter, buy 1000 per month in summer and build up a buffer, then you don't need to buy the extra 100kwh over the 1000 breakpoint in winter.

Yes, that's called the block tarriff. It resets every month but the more you use, the more you pay. Eskom are pretty clear about this:

Thanks Fudzy,

I did send it to the managing agent but then she forward the mail to STSS and then STSS came back with a whole list of their costs and expenses to justify how the rate is calculated but still, it can't be that high.

They buy from city power at a discount, by the way. Not much, but about 4 or 5c/kwh.

Are you on prepaid? Below is the tariffs for Bloemfontein as taken from Prepaid24's website:
This municipality includes: Bloemfontein, Botshabelo, Mangaung, Opkoms and Thaba Nchu.

Mangaung Municipality uses a step tariff (block tariff), this means the more you buy in a calendar month the more you will pay per unit. It is an attempt by the municipality to get the electricity users to use less electricity.

So, if you have received a different number of units for the same amount purchased in the same calendar month, the reason is the step tariff that they use.

2015/2016 Tariffs

Domestic Indigent Summer (Limited to 350 kWh/month):

Block 1 [0 – 50 kWh] R0.86

Block 2 [51 - 350 kWh] R0.86

Domestic Indigent Winter (Limited to 350 kWh/month):

Block 1 [0 – 50 kWh] R0.91

Block 2 [51 - 350 kWh] R0.91

Domestic High Summer:

Block 1 [0 – 350 kWh] R0.96

Block 2 [351 > 600 kWh] R1.55

Domestic High Winter:

Block 1 [0 – 350 kWh] R1.12

Block 2 [351 > 600 kWh] R1.77

Live in a townhouse complex. Complex has a bulk time of use meter. We used to have normal private meters for each unit. This however always left a shortfall from what was collected by managing agents in electricity charges and what the monkeypality charged the complex. So time of use pre-paid private meters were installed. And these are our winter tariffs according to the private company that "manages" the pre-paid electricity.
Prices are excluding vat. Prices also exclude a 14% charge the company charges to "manage" the pre-paid electricity. All in all I know I am getting ass-raped.
Peak R3.11 per kwh
Standard R1.71 per kwh
Off-peak R1.65 per kwh

Suppose I should also mention the POS on the trustees who pushed for this stupid idea of pre-paid electricity, is the owner of the private business that got the contract to manage the pre-paid electricity of the complex. So everyones bills tripled at least. This POS is however not affected as he covered his roof in solar panels.

Also remember the time of use multiplier - we have off-peak where the multiplier is < 1, standard which is 1x and peak which is > 1x. During peak times the meter chows units like a mother fckre. Also peak seems to be most of the day - off peak only really on Saturday afternoon and Sunday
