They are starting to roll out prepaid electricity meters in Tshwane and my question is which works out cheaper, if you use 800Kw a moth, does one buys 800 once off or if you buy 400 every two weeks?

it's worked out monthly how many units, not how often in a month. this has been discussed a gazillion times in the past

PLEASE STOP SHOUTING @Nemoneiros

You buy it all at the same time.

Shouldn't make a difference. If you buy 800 in total every calendar month

But... Better to buy 600 every month than buy 800, 400, 800 (need to check the exact rates to be sure).

So should then make no difference to the unit prices if one buys 400 this week and then 400 two weeks later.

it's calculated how many in a month
So if you buy 10 a day for 30 days or 300 in 1 day of a month you still fall in the same category. Tier is the word i think.
Anyways at Tier 1 for example you pay x amount up to 100 units for example
next tier is 101 to 300 units for example is x amount
next tier is 301 to 600 units for example is x amount

my figures arent correct, im just explaining the Tier structure that is been used.

Right. So assuming you are on Tshwane directly and not indigent connected. Its very interesting...

At 800kwh every month, you're always buying in the top band -- over 650kwh. As such it doesn't really matter when you buy, but make sure you DO buy at least 650kwh every month.

First block (0-100) costs R196 inc VAT
Next block (100-400) costs R687 inc VAT (883rand for 400)
... Will finish later :)

Ps - thank you, finally stumbled on a domestic ToU tariff too :)

I hate my pre paid meter.
Always have to make sure you don't forget to buy units.

Thanks you guys who gave positive feedback MUCH apreciated.
Its a typical bar room conversation.
Both are right.

The first 400 units will cost you LESS than the 2nd, but it doesn't matter if buy 400 now and 400 later or 800 now. Overall the cost will be the same (excluding any transaction costs!)

Do you live in a mansion to use that much electricity?

I use 150kwh per month, granted that's with a solar geyser, gas stove and LED lighting all round. In winter it might go to a max of 250kwh

Lucky bastards. We pay more than R3,500 pm per transformer just for the privilege of being connected to Eskom. We currently have 8 connection points running at R336K per year. Each point averages R250K per year in electricity usage over and above the monthly fee. One point runs at R0.6 million a year. 2 of the transformers are shared with neighbours, but Eskom doesn't split the cost. You and your neighbour pay the full price.

Inverter (grid tied) averages 220kwh per month + 80kwh (kettle, oven, washing machine, dish washer and geyser) not on inverter = 300kwh per month.

This isn't a dick swinging contest to see who uses the least amount of electricity.

I live in a flat and I use around 400 units.

Pretty sure if I switch to Apple my power usage will half, that and switching the home lab to Synology or a HP microserver.
