Hi Guys,

I purchased some electricity off the standard bank for a friend this afternoon, I paid R300 and only received 77 units, how is this possible and how can I complain?

Being that it's the first of the month, there are one of two possibilities I can think of:

1: Your friend owes the municipality money and they are deducting this from the prepaid Electricity payments until dent is paid up but, as far as I know, this is only a thing for the City of Cape Town.

P.S hope your friend is paying you back, else you are now servicing their debt...

2: There is a 3rd party vendor involved in issuing of tokens and they are charging an arm and a leg for electricity..

It's generally all municipalities that will do that but yeah it will tell you on the receipt.

Point 1.

If you buy off of bank app. there is no 3rd party involved.

Here is the sms I received. I know for a fact that you get less units if you buy later in the month but never on the 1st and never so little units. I'm at a loss here as to why it's like this.

Standard Bank:
Ref: V380304941
Amt:R 300.00
U: 77.80Kwh
4135 4123 6466 6966 4415

Debt:R 0.00
Charges:R 0.00
Query? 0860 288 673

No, not quite how it works.. it's based on amount of units purchased within the same month.. there are blocks, and as you progress through the blocks, you pay more per unit.. simplified example:

0 - 100 units is charged at R1/unit
100 - 350 units is charged at R1.50 a unit

And so on and so forth..

Anyway, use the number in the SMS to complain..

According to the tarrifs document even if they were in block 2 which is the highest tarrif I should have only paid around R250 incl vat so R50 worth of units is missing.

Cool, didn't know..
It's not the truth, charges are there if your prepaid is managed by a third party vendor regardless of where you buy from, I can only assume MightyQuin did not understand what you are saying.

Third party vendor customer speaking.

Wow
That is a lot
And I thought I was getting nailed every month purchasing R650 and getting 238,6 units @ R2,72 per unit here in Somerset West through FNB App everytime.

That seems about correct, depending on what tariff rate they are ons it seems spot on. We bought R250 today and got 70 units.

Edit, corrected to 70 units as opposed to 65

Nope.. the most expensive tariff for the 0 - 600 kWh block is 2.37 per unit ex vat.. even with vat, you don't get to 300 bucks for 77 units..

Must be 3rd party vendor charges being added on here..

Houtbay, Cape Town
Alright... So that is City of Cape Town (not Eskom) according to my map!
R300 for 77.8 units = 3.86/kWh
Theres no tariff which corresponds directly:

Starting on COMMERCIAL:
SPU3 - No daily charge small business = a small business tariff = 4.38 (I kid you not!!)
SPU2 - small daily business = 5.80/day and 3.6785/kWh... Would be close but not exact at 1 day
3.6785 x 77.8 = 286.19... leaving 13.81... not an exact number of days... But maybe 1 day AND R8 charged by Standard bank?!

So down to Residential rates
Domestic = 272.82c/kwh lowest band
So that would be 212.25 for 77.8...
That would be a 29.7% margin... Feels wrong

All the highest bands = 3.3126
77.8 x 3.3126 = 257.72
That would be a 14% margin... Could be? But you'd only be in those bands if

Feels like it must be a dodgy service fee with a R20 + 8% or something like that. Or maybe Standard Bank are charging you R10 and then another service provider is charging R10 etc...

The first R150 odd goes towards the service fee.
Nah. That's always on the rates account.
Home Users pay R194.29 inc VAT.
So if it was that he'd only have R105.71 left for units... And would only get 44 units (at 2.4004.inc vat per unit on Home Tariff).

Try again..
