Solar storm warning

How do you convince people and governments to spend money on preparing for a weather event that may only happen every few hundred years, but whose effects could be catastrophic without the proper precautions?

That is the challenge faced by solar and heliospheric scientists worldwide who are working on early warning systems for severe geomagnetic storms that could destroy electronic devices and knock out whole electrical grids.

Clickbait, I thought this was another Eskom fearmongering article about solar installations.
I actually didn't, because I read some article about magnetic poles swapping around every few thousand years.

It still did not entice me to click the link.

"Telling a country or group of countries they need to switch off their electrical grid and electronic devices for several days would cause significant economic damage and potentially leave them vulnerable to malicious actors."

Only on South-Africa:

MyBroadband headlines these days are so bad, I first check the forum to see if it's anything worth clicking on..... don't know how they sell this slop to advertisers.

Yeah this is proper clickbait.

I can save you time. It's not worth it.

It should please everyone in this thread to learn that no matter what I try, I can't get people to read about the important work being done to prepare for super-X class CMEs (not a real term, I just don't know what the formal term is for a Carrington-class CME off the top of my head).

So I've changed the headline to be Shakespearean.

This is one of the few headlines that wasn't poor and misleading

Aimed for Shakespeare but got Nicholas Sparks.

It's better for sure, punny and intriguing for those interested in the topic.

Well done.

In this country at least, when the storm hits there's a chance quite a few transformers will already be off

Ours was down for 2 hours this morning again.
