Hi Guys,

So my SO had a student loan in 2008 through NSFAS
Unfortunately due to circumstances she was unable to continue payments.

Today she received a statement via email saying she owes them 11k+
The date listed is 2013-10-01.There's interest accumulated on there for 2k

Up until this point,it was forgotten about.shes kept the same number for all these years and lived in the same place. They made no attempts to contact her via mail, calls or smses. Seriously forgot about it in all sense of the meaning.

My question is,wouldn't this fall away?
We haven't answered the email or anything just yet.Shes stressing now because its an unexpected spanner in the works.

Should we just man up and pay or what

You should just man up and pay up....

BUT if the last date of any contact is 2013-10-01 then the debt has prescribed and you can ignore it.

He/She took the loan. Juts pay it. The money is used to fund other needy students

If no summons and no acknowledgement of the debt for the past 3 years it has prescribed.

How does one forget about debt?

You should man and pay for it, its not even a question worth asking.

Can't answer on whether it can be considered as prescribed

Guys - Not all debt prescribes. Municipal debt for example never prescribes

Government debt (And I presume NSFAS is this) - 15 years...

Not paying it means less money for another student.
Or alternatively more money to get from the tax payers

As mentioned by others. An NSFAS loan does not fall under normal debt because its a loan from the government.

Tell her to pay her debt. I was one of the students who benefited from the NSFAS and I paid every cent back to government (not that its my business, but it can help someone else).

Pay your debts, its the right thing to do except for e-tolls which I believe will commence prescription this month for drivers started in 2013 Decemebr.

etoll never heard of it, neither have I ever subscribed to such a service.....

Pay your NSFAS debt, I benefitted through it and am paying mine off. Have 3 years of payments left through community service.
