Could someone advise me how to approach any media outlet to obtain a press pass for concerts and etc. I only want to be able to take in my camera and get good photos without being hassled. I buy my own tickets so it's not like I'm looking for freebies.

Thanks

You have to register as press for each event and obtain a pass from the organisers. There isn't a "blanket" pass you get for this sort of thing. If you are an independent up and coming photographer register a company, print a business card and apply for a press pass from the organisers. Having a Daily Planet ID card is not going to get you much further than your own company card. Remember these things are copyrighted and you technically cannot publish it without permission, even if it is a selfie on your facebook page.

What sort of media outlet and what sort of events? Most local newspapers will send their own guys to cover the event and the big agencies already have a a large stable of freelancers chomping at the bit to get paid.

When it comes to concerts your best bet is to get in touch with the local organisers, show them your portfolio and offer them images in return for accreditation. Keep in mind that typically for a concert you're going to be limited to the first couple of songs anyway, after that they remove you from the pit and will hold on to your gear for the rest of the event - or of course you can just leave. As mentioned you're also limited as to what you can actually do with the images afterwards, you'll most likely sign an agreement and you'll be legally bound to it.
