Hmm, I see Pretoria seems to be on. Checked this morning and had an "Operational - Good" coverage over my place.

Is someone from Pretoria on the system yet? I need to put in a month's notice for my old connection to be disconnected, but don't want to do that until I know that they are *actually* on [:D]

Cheerio!

I asked a similar question.

Where are the PTA users? If any....no reply.

I guess there are no PTA users, except you and I. But I do remember someone also living in PTA North, but can't remember his nick.

I also have a signal here in Hatfield where I work, and wondering if I should just get it for work, have a dummy PC here just downloading stuff. But then the question I asked is...will they ever support Pretoria North.

If they will not be supporting Pretoria North in the near future then it's pointless me getting the service. Yes I know, it sucks living in the middle of nowhere. Oh well...128 ISDN for the rest of my internet days.

saintm, where abouts are you in PTA? I get partial signal here in Hatfield, then next across the road from me they have good signal, so the tower must be pretty close.

Hi nuyork!

I am out in Lynnwood Glen, quite close to Menlyn. So in theory, I would probably be covered by Menlo Park? Closest around to me I guess.

And where were all the beta testers? Feedback please ... [:p]

Cheerio!

Hi, I'm located in pretoria and have my modem.
I live in Newlands (close to menlyn).
The operational good is a white lie at the moment.
The only tower that is on is Kingsley wich is about 15k's maybe allot more further. I do receive a signal of about 8% max, but that's it.

There are 2 more towers on, but it aint zita or menlo park

They say (and have been saying) Everything should be up by the end of this month.

So just a little bit more waiting.

(Oh and damn that metal tray stuff works!)
even though I couldnt connect... I doubt such a bad signal would.

yo dude, spoke to someone in arcadia thats got the 512k package, not sure if he's on these forums though

TrXtR:- when you say everything should be up and running by the end of this month (February), do you mean just the towers that need activating?

I'm hoping for more towers all over PTA.

I know a friend who even lives out further than I do, and I would say that his area is even less populated than where I live, and guess what...he has good signal.

noone:- Arcadia is in the middle of Pretoria City Central, so they are bound to have a few towers operational in that area.

Does anyone know who I can e-mail or phone at Sentech or where ever, to ask about future tower placements and an estimate date of when those sites will go active? Who has got infomation like that?

look in the other topic called "sentech towers" i think

there should be alist of towers

but

you could try calling fastcomm... counted about 18 towers on their map at the offices (you didn't hear that from me)

Arcadia is allot closer to kingsley than what I am,
but if I do get time over the weekend I could ride past there ;)

And I though I could get a patch antenna, but theyre outa stock and only like 20 march or something will I get, but by that time, I should be up and runnin

I found the other user that was also in Pretoria North.

Xyber, if you're still out there, what's happening? Are you getting Sentech MyWireless? Or have you moved to a location that has MyWireless support? What are you on currently? Where about's in PTA North are you?

yip Same problem i am in Constantia Park have my modem ..But no signal they said the base station will be only active at the end of march.thats after i called them and ask them before i applied...
They said they will not bill me until my area is active

Im in Burnett Street, Hatfield, PTA. I definitely want to get mywireless 128. I am worried though about the signal strength. I am a student and I dont want to take a huge risk. anyways, I was wondering, since the modem is portable, would anyone in my area by willing to bring the modem over to my place for a quick 'test' of signal strength etc. I would just like to see if it *works* then I will probably order straight away.

I would appreciate this greatly and I have a lot of stuff to share so it can be a fair trade. I also promise to do the same for the next person like me when I get mywireless.

I was told on the phone that Sentech plans to get 90% coverage of Gauteng (or 90% signal strength everywhere - cant remember which) pretty soon. Im just worried that there may be some problem at my flat. Must be sure ;-)

Can anyone confirm the 90% story? I think a lot of people are worried that the service will saturate/stagnate and remain slow/congested...

greedyflyza: I'm work on the corner of Hilda & Arcadia (hmmm, that doesn't sound right), and I get good signal where I am. But you're 2 or 3 blocks away from me, so I don't know how that will affect the signal. I was considering getting Sentech, but then I'll only be able to use it while I'm at work. But I'm going to wait a couple more months to see if Pretoria North is supported.

If you find someone close to you who will help you out, let me know. I check every 2 weeks on the Sentech coverage website, just in hopes my area is covered. Hopefully after CPT is connected, they will concerntrate on more towers nationwide. One can only hope.

As for being a student, who knows it Sentech will even allow you to sign up. I don't know what there rules and regs are. I might also have a problem cause I don't earn 50K a month, or whatever they need to see that you have fund available.

No problem.

I'm still looking for someone nearby to do a quick test.

For the money aspect, apparently if you dont earn enough you can make a special arrangement like paying extra in advance. I am going to try this.

I would really like to see if it works at my place first though ASAP.

I dont trust the web site since how could it possibly be that accurate. Its basically just guessing.. there could be other factors that it doesnt take into account.

If this thread is accurate then it could possibly mean that Sentech enables zones in which they have a demand for - could this be true?

If I live inbetween Menlyn & Pick N Pay, close to the Faerie Glen Hospital - does that mean if I apply for Mywireless I'll have to wait 2 weeks (or 4weeks), and in that time Sentech will enable my zone? (because it said it's operational on their little online map)

But then does that mean that if I go 5 blocks down the road with my laptop that the zone won't be enabled and I wont get access?

I'm in Pta East, and still waiting for my modem etc (sent in the contract Friday).

Hmmm... *Inkblot scratches his head...* Wouldn't it be nice if Sentech could post a list of Towers (indicating exact locations) and include the status of each e.g. active / operational / planned (with date going operational) etc.?

Clearly there's a lot of interest in the MyWireless product. A bit of transparency will not hurt. Uncertainty about the service just might scare off potential customers. So if anybody from Sentech is reading this... please add another page to the official website indicating your current and planned "network" coverage.

I'm planning a trip to Centurion soon to visit some family members. According to the Zone locator I don't have must hope of connecting. Need to do some business in the Pretoria CBD so might be able to drive around a bit with my notebook. How long does the modem last on the battery anyway... I get lost in cybertime... keep forgetting to check my watch for an accurate reading. [?] I'll post my finding regarding reception in the Pretoria area sometime next week.

I agree with you totally Inkblot. Although, ProAsm has got a list of towers on his website. 10 towers currently operational for Phase 1 rollout. But there is no word on new and future towers.

I've contacted Sentech and FastComm about the future of Pretoria Towers. Sentech has not responded, and FastComm say they have nothing to do with the Sentech Rollout plan. Lovely!!

Ditch: did you recieve your modem yet?

Anyone heard any more news on the rumors about MTN and Vodacom getting involved in Sentech? Are there any forum posts about this? I'd like to find out the facts? As far as I have heard, apparently M & V are going to let Sentech use their sites to put up more towers or something.

Got my modem today. I get 20% indoors from the Menlo Park tower (+- 3 km). I'm near Faire Glen hospital.

I looked around Zita Park yesterday. There is no tower there.

Funny how there are no towers in the new east.

It's the new arrears in the new east when you find lots of money and crap Telkom Infrastructure.

I live 4km east of Silver Lakes and there are no copper lines.

Went for a little drive yesterday. Nearly caused a couple of accidents too. The notebook wouldn't stay on the dashboard and the modem went sliding all over the place so I had to leave it on the passenger seat next to me. So... recommendation: Either take somebody with to monitor the signal / hold the computer & modem or buy a lot of Prestik and check your car insurance. [:)]

It was difficult to read the signal due to glare on the notebook screen. (Hmmm... need to devise some kind of box / screen to shield the screen from light.) Anyway... back to the driving test... Couldn't get any reception in Centurion. (Unfortunately battery on the modem died before I could explore some more).[:(]

An interesting thing happened as I drove right past the Mintek building (Tower 112 in Randburg)... I expected the signal to go up significantly... instead it dropped to zero. Very strange... perhaps somebody could explain that. [?]

However, a couple of blocks away from the tower I received the best signal that I've had so far - 52%!. Unfortunately it was right in the middle of a busy road near my house in heavy traffic (quite strange for a Sunday afternoon). I stopped with my hazards on trying to do a quick ping test to saix... an action frowned upon by passing motorists. All the hooting and "traffic signs / hand signals" from these "friendly" motorists distracted me a bit so I accidently typed the wrong IP. Alas... I had to abort my test. I tried but was unable to park on the side of the road, and the signal dropped to 47%. Seems like there's a nice "Sweet spot" smack dab in the middle of the freekin' road. Can anybody help me out with some "Construction work" uniforms and signs? [}:)]
