Superb 1.4TCe engine expands Renault Mégane range
• New 1.4TCe engine delivers power (96 kW) of a 1,8-litre engine and torque (190 Nm) of a 2,0-litre powerplant

Renault South Africa has added an advanced, highly efficient turbocharged engine to its new-generation Mégane range.
Designated TCe (an acronym for Turbo Control efficiency), the new 1,4-litre engine links superior efficiency and fuel economy to high specific output and low operating and maintenance costs. It features twin overhead camshafts and 16 valves.
The 1.4TCe powerplant expresses the latest, high-tech approach to advanced engine design, which favours smaller capacities, high efficiency and turbocharging to reduce emissions and consumption without compromising output and resultant performance. In addition, the power unit has been optimised for high torque at low engine speeds, ensuring instant response with no lag, and a linear power delivery. It is available on both the five-door Mégane Hatchback and three-door Mégane Coupé.
In real terms, the 1 397 cc four-cylinder unit performs to levels comparable with a normally aspirated 1,8-litre powerplant, with a power output of 96 kW, and a torque peak of 190 Nm, which is equal to that of a 2,0-litre unit. Drive is to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with a closely-spaced ratios to emphasise the engine’s athletic character.
This 1.4Tce accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9,5 seconds, but while the hatch attains a 200 km/h top speed, the more aerodynamic coupé manages 205 km/h.
Fuel consumption is impressive, with a combined cycle consumption figure of 6,5 litres/100 km, while CO2 emissions come to 153 g/km.
The TCe engine employs an aluminium block and cylinder head, and is equipped with a single-scroll turbocharger. The intake port profile has been adapted to promote optimum combustion for enhanced torque at low engine speeds, without compromising maximum power.
The continuously variable camshaft angle at the intake port also contributes to improved performance throughout the rev range, while reducing fuel consumption. Oil jets are employed to cool the pistons in the interests of long-term service life and reliability.
The new 1.4 TCe powerplant has the added benefit of ranking among the best in class in terms of running and maintenance costs.
Oil and oil filter change intervals are every 30 000 km (or every two years), while the air filter and spark plugs need changing every 60 000 km (or every four years). The accessory drive belt only needs changing every 150 000 km (or every six years).
As with all Renault models, the Mégane Hatch 1.4TCe and Mégane Coupé 1.4TCe are both covered by an industry-best warranty and service plan package. This consists of a five-year/150 000 km warranty, and a five-year/100 000 km service plan.
