PREVIEW: Table mountain the backdrop as Formula E heads to Cape Town

I went today and I was pleasantly surprised at how well run the event was. Signage everywhere, no one getting out of hand, emergency services present, lots of marshall-type people to help with questions.

The queues at the food and drinks stalls were long though, but I expected that.

Hopefully it's good enough to get the F1 bosses to consider Cape Town in the future. The track was pretty simple but it's a beautiful street race location.

It is basic and high speed, there is no way two cars can fit side by side in the first corner

The tyres look like normal sedan road tyres, it looks hazardous for racing

It’s all part of the sustainability aspect of the series. They only need to use 1 set of tyres of the race goes wet.

Cape Town e-Prix all about e-mobility, says mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis

The inaugural Cape Town e-Prix was not about racing but e-mobility, says Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

“The purpose behind the event shows it’s more than a race – it’s all about talking about how incredible e-mobility is. The move to green technology and sustainable renewal technologies. This is a huge showcase or highlight of that,” he said.

He said that global event holders were bringing events to Cape Town because they know that the City of Cape Town offers excellent and professional service.

“It is not about money because we cannot match other cities around the world in wealthier places. It is not about sponsorship. It is absolutely about professionalism and excellence.”

Cape Town hosted the e-Prix on Saturday and Hill-Lewis said it was a wonderful weekend for the city.

Cape Town ePrix organisers ‘delighted’ with inaugural Formula E race

Cape Town held Sub-Saharan Africa’s first ever Formula E race and it was a big success according to event promoter Iain Banner.

Months of preparation culminated as the event began on Friday afternoon with all eyes on South Africa’s Kelvin van der Linde but sadly his race weekend didn’t go according to plan after his team sustained rear suspension issues in qualifying.

However that didn’t dampen fans’ experience of the event and according to data coming out after the race, Cape Town has been the best performing leg in season nine.

Banner, who has been instrumental in securing Formula E making it’s debut in the Mother City, allowed motor sport fans to finally get a taste of what electric racing is all about.

The event was a sell-out as 25 983 tickets were all gone days ahead of the race and Banner says they are looking at increasing that number for the next race.

“There was no wall papering going on, this was genuine demand, we were sold out by Wednesday night/Thursday, so my answer is delighted. A sell-out was what we were aiming for but I do realise that we had to build a sport. People didn’t know about Formula E to be honest, or very few did. We got it on SuperSport a while back, then on SABC, now we are on eTV, terrestrial, free to air.

Cape Town Formula E was a world-class experience that silenced the naysayers

I recently watched a video where a few young lions were making life difficult for a honey badger. They kept clawing at the poor badger, biting it and tossing it around. Then all of a sudden the badger got a bit bored and started fighting back. It started to bite and attack the lions.

The lions, unsure about this, knew that they had no chance against this badger and ran off. The badger shook itself off and trotted on its way. We South Africans are that badger. Why you might ask?

Well, despite the difficulties that we face, crime, corruption and the like, we will continue to shake ourselves off and carry on. That’s why Cape Town played host to the first Formula E event on African soil, despite rampant load shedding. We are South African and no electricity crisis will stop us from hosting a motorsport event where all the vehicles rely on electricity to run.

I enjoy a good old Formula One race on a Sunday afternoon. I also enjoy watching a few GT3 cars go wheel to wheel around a track, I even enjoy Australian V8 Supercar racing where they just end up driving into each other.
