Just curious how long it should take them ?

I have a PC that died a year back - dunno why, it just wouldn't turn on. So I bought a new PC but now I *may* want to use it as a HTPC. I'm taking it a shop and the quote is :

R200.00 diagnostics (I think it's PSU - and I reckon if it is, I'll replace. If it isn't, I may well as chuck the PC)

If I go further, he'll waive the R200.0o diagnostic charge and change the PSU, put in a GT210 GFX and put the MB etc in a brand new case for R1,010, providing it takes under an hour.

Price OK?

Yup!

Not the prettiest case, but he said it's the smallest I can get away with

Really?

This is Matrix .... hmmm

Which branch?

Matrix WH testes my PSU for free on site, in front of me.
That's weird. They wanted to charge me R100 to test my GPU, just to see if it starts-up with the PC (no benching/testing). Just wanted to check if the card is not DOA...

1) Diagnostics are worth nothing. There are other IT places who will check your stuff out for the hope of getting your business. If you have a friend with a PC just use his PSU to test. If you were close to me I'd let you come over and test this weekend.

2) Can't you rather just find a card on carbonite or gumtree? Anything but 210 please.

Don't they usually recommend a 210 for a XBMC setup?

It's a 2-series card that was released in 2009. It doesn't really have enough shaders to handle decent image postprocessing It actually depends what level of video playback you want - a 210 will be fine for a certain level but so will integrated HD series graphics, and an AMD APU will kill that 210 (and would be one of my top choices for a HTPC). What are the specs of the rest of the machine?

Asus P5QC MB
Intel Q9300 2.5 Core2Quad
4GB RAM

If my HP microserver can just about manage with XBMC - surely this will do better?

Sigh, I have a Mobo, CPU (Core2 Quad Q9400) and 4GB RAM that has been lying in my cupboard ready to sell.
