the price of a 4870 512mb was R3760 on the 17th of this month, today that same card is R5208,WTF

The days of quote being valid for 7 days are gone! Now every quote I send out says it lasts for ONE day only. So if you going to place an order do it now, or hope that when you do, the price is remotely the same.

it a real shame on the high prices , Mustek , Rectum , Sahara pushed up their prices by 33% over the last few days , this is real insane but I was sure last week I saw some of the guys crying blue murder when Esquire pushed their prices by 5% , to be honest I check around on pricing and Esquire is still by far the best on processors , hard drives and media this week , in fact Arnie my rep told me that they expecting some price drops as the rate is getting better , let see if the other wholesalers follow suite and drop prices , that is why I have always supported Esquire Cape Town even though the service was not great at time but has drastically improved since they got rid of the branch manager Imran something and put Arnie in his place , with Arnie Emile and Graham i can only praise the service I get from them like today for instance , I order some media they had on special , I walked-in gave Graham my order number and stock was ready for collection , left in 5 tops , b4 had to wait 10-20 minutes before they would scan each item.

Hey guys
while I was posting on another thread this email just popped a few seconds ago , If you in Cape Town take advantage of this offer -pricing looks sharp

Please stop with constant posting of pricelists that present no useful information to these threads. There is no price here that is comparable to other prices as they are exclusive esquire items. The thread topic was Price War, not lets see the latest esquire specials. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I'm getting a little irritated by your esquire posts popping up in every thread.

In terms of the price war ... many prices have shot up sky high. Comstar for example has increased all their pricing by roughly 35% according to Farhaad, yet they refuse to send me a new pricelist due to the fluctuations ... so I am stuck with a pricelist from before they started. I now pushed up all their prices 35% ... but am thinking of removing their products completely ... because I don't want to seem expensive on some items and lose money on others

Lets just hope our distributors follow the Rand and drop pricing ... all their prices are based at like R11.50 ... and presently rate is R10.20 ... so I would like to see roughly a 10 - 15% drop at least in prices. But profits are good for them at the moment ... and consumers are still buying ... no reason for them to drop pricing  ... in one way its good for me, because my markup is maintained on new pricing when I update pricelists therefore a few more rand ... but in another sense it irritates me because sales are dropping due to the pricing. :(

Although I've had a fairly good sale rate this week for some reason :p ... I guess speculation in case prices might go up more ... the inflation and interest rates won't like this if thats the case :p

Anyway, rant is off now ... I'm over tired and think its time for bed :D

+1! Useless for end users. If people can get from Esquire they would have received the email.

I was in the local Incredible this morning, and the drones were hard at work scratching price labels off and re-pricing.

I've posted somewhere else about my recent experience...
I ordered a HD4870X2 from prophecy for about R5700.
They mailed me that they were out of stock and offered to refund or change the order.
The new prices coming in are all close to R8000. The Asus 4870X2 is now a mere R10400

I phoned loads of retailers and even some suppliers and its clear that the high-end ATI cards suffered price increases of 30% to 40% during last week.
All suppliers are out of stock and all retailers are waiting for ridiculously over-priced new stock to come in.

Prophecy is currently advertising their limited "old stock price" graphics cards on their home page.
I had to phone them to make sure I can at least secure an HD4870__ (note the gap at the end) at "old" prices.
Will have to make do without X2 for now.
(Websites that still list good "old" prices have simply not yet updated their price lists. Phone them and you'll see...)

Which brings me to my conspiracy theory (and back to the "pricewars" thread misnomer)

I just don't buy that all the suppliers suddenly went out of stock when the rand fell. One of my friends running a retailer told me that his supplier supposedly still had more than 200 HD4870X2s in stock, just a week ago. Now, when he ordered, they were reportedly out of stock and waiting for new stock to arrive at new prices.

I think someone in the supply chain is jumping on the Rand-bandwagon and selling old stock at new prices to make an extra buck.
Imagine the margins suplliers can make if they have piles of R8/$ stock which they can now re-price to R12, blaming the Rand...

I think that's exactly what we're seeing right now.

Not that it helps to post all of this but I feel better after bitchin a bit :)
