Hacking someone to death is trying sending a message. Those South American drug gangs do it all the time, catch a rival gang member outside some night club and hack him into tiny pieces then climb back on scooters and drive off like nothing happened.

Family of slain KZN principal devastated

Durban – Two weeks ago Nokuthula Magwanyana, 46, was allegedly told to step down from her position as the principal of Villa Maria Primary School in Pietermaritzburg - or else.
Fearing for her life, she allegedly reported the threats to the police, but on Wednesday afternoon Mgwanyana’s lifeless body was discovered along Table Mountain Road in Bishopstowe. Her body was slumped out of the driver’s door of her maroon Chevrolet.
The lower half of her body was still secured with a seat belt inside the vehicle.
It appeared as if the school principal had been hacked to death with a panga.
Magwanyana’s sister Toyi Mthembu, 54, who travelled from Johannesburg to be with her family, said they were devastated.
Mthembu said she received a phone call from her younger sister Zonke at around 17:30 on Wednesday asking her to call her when she arrived home from work.
"It sounded urgent, but she didn't say anything. Later, I got another call from my elder sister Lulu, she said the same thing and I insisted that she say whatever she wanted to say over the phone."
Mthembu said she had a feeling something was wrong because the family had just buried their mother Bonakele Mthembu, who died from cancer.
"She said, 'Sticks has been killed', and broke down. She was sobbing and she didn't have further details on what had happened."
Immediately after speaking to her sister, Mthembu made calls to find out what had happened and was told that her sister was killed on her way home from school.
"She was pushed off the gravel road and from what I heard from her husband, she had several stab wounds and there was a big gash on her back and it looked like she had been hacked with a panga.
"She was still in the car, but her body was slumped out, she still had her seat belt on. The driver’s window was broken and the door was open. There was a pool of blood on the floor of the driver’s seat."
Mthembu said her sister’s life had been threatened, but she had never confided in her about the threats.
"She was told to step down or else and she ran to the police. When the appointment processes started, she didn't tell me that there were problems.
"She told me once she was appointed that there were problems and I used to tell her that her life was not worth any amount of money or position, she should be careful."
She said her sister was born to be a teacher.
"She loved and understood children, even when we were growing up she always shared her knowledge. She was a loving and kind person, how can one human being do this to another? To a woman?"
Mthembu said she would pray for her sister's killers.
"I am asking God to forgive those that killed my sister. May God bring the Holy Spirit. I want them to know that I forgive them," she said.

Slain principal faced school threats

Pietermaritzburg - Not content with painting a threatening message at her home, Nokuthula Magwanyana’s killers brought their threats for her to quit her job to work, boldly spray painting the word “resign” in red across her office wall.
When the 20-year education veteran refused to be cowed by the warning, they made good on their threats, brutally hacking her to death as she made her way home from Villa Maria Primary School in the Table Mountain area, on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Villa Maria pupils were sent home early as Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, along with other department officials, police and psychologists, briefed Magwanyana’s colleagues.
Officials believe that the murder stems from over Magwanyana’s appointment as principal at the school almost two years ago.
Arrest 'at this school'
At the briefing, as he speculated on the motive for their principal’s murder, Meshack Radebe, deputy speaker of the KZN Legislature, told Villa Maria teachers that they “should be honest”.
“I believe that when an arrest is made, it should be made at this school. The problem stems from within the school,” Radebe said.
Almost two weeks before Magwanyana’s death, the school’s offices were vandalised, with messages threatening that she would be killed if she did not resign painted on the walls.
Sprayed across a board next to the office’s entrance, one of those messages remained on Thursday, the word “resign” written boldly in red paint.
Parts of the office’s walls have had a fresh coat of paint to cover up other threatening messages, one of which police sources say read “Nokuthula resign or ...”, with a sketch of a gun next to the words.
Nkonyeni said that although she strove to see women appointed to higher management positions, she had no idea that it would expose them to danger.
“I strongly believe women are performing jobs just as well as men, and I am saddened to see people elbowing them out of the way because of this,” she told the staff at the school.
“The department understands the trauma you face and the trauma that faces your pupils. The law should take its course,” she said.
Police on Thursday questioned a number of people at the school.
'Puzzled' by threats
The Witness spoke to Sibongiseni Magwanyana, the murdered principal’s husband, who fell to his knees when he saw his wife’s body on Wednesday.
Sibongiseni said the family was “not okay” and had been deeply hurt by her murder.
Sibongiseni described his wife as a “loving and caring person” who was an advocate of women’s empowerment.
He said she was “puzzled” when the threats were made, and she never described any problems at the school to him when they spoke about it.
Magwanyana’s sister, Toyi Mthembu, said she was “born a teacher” because she always taught children at family gatherings and went the extra mile for her pupils.
The sisters lost their mother only a month ago, and Mthembu believes Magwanyana did not inform the family of any troubles at school because she did not want to burden them further.
“To the people who killed her, I wish God grant them peace and forgiveness.
“We are angry, but above all, there is God,” Mthembu said.
Magwanyana leaves behind her husband and two children.
Her funeral is scheduled to take place in Hammarsdale on Saturday next week.
Call for probe
The National Teachers’ Union (Natu) on Thursday called on provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni to establish a “special investigating unit to probe the death of school principals”.
Natu deputy president and spokesperson Allen Thompson said this incident shows that the motive was not robbery.
“We want the police to prioritise murder cases pertaining to principals, teachers or any person who holds a high position in the department of education.
"Principals are not safe, they are threatened every day by people who coerce them on when are they retiring or planning to leave their positions. When a senior person like a principal dies we want this team to dig deep, find perpetrators [who] must face the law.” Thompson said.

Pietermaritzburg – It appears as though Villa Maria Primary School principal Nokuthula Magwanyana didn’t tell anyone that her life was in danger, not even her husband.
Sbongiseni Magwanyana told News24 on Friday that his wife had never mentioned that someone wanted to kill her. “She never said anything to me about her work,” he said.
The school principal, 46, was found dead in her vehicle on Table Mountain Road, Pietermaritzburg, on Wednesday afternoon. It appeared as though she had been hacked with a panga.
It is alleged that the motive of the killing had something to do with her appointment.
Magwanyana’s husband said he was struggling to come to terms with his wife’s brutal murder.
“I am in pain. There is no other way to describe how I am feeling. I hope the police will do their work to catch those responsible for her death,” he said.
Muti left behind
Chairperson of the School Governing Body, Mlungisi Gcabashe, recalls the chilling details of the morning he and Magwanyana saw a threatening message aimed at the school principal.
The words "Nokuthula Resign" were written in red on the school building.
With the writing on the wall, Gcabashe said the school principal did not inform the SGB that her life was in any danger.
Gcabashe said it also appeared as though a ritual had been performed as there were red candles and a tray with burnt (impepho) traditional incense and muti left behind.
“When we arrived at school two weeks ago, we saw the writing on two walls of the staff room building and one on another classroom building.
“The culprits did this on a Sunday at midnight because they wanted us to see it on a Monday. We asked the security guard if he had seen anything and he confessed that he fell asleep.”
Gcabashe said the security guards also admitted to arriving late at work that Sunday.
When asked about Magwanyana’s career at the school, he said she joined the school three years ago.
“She was the acting principal for three years and she was made the principal in November last year. She never said anything about problems in the appointment processes.”
'It is obvious that she had an enemy'
He said he did not know who killed Magwanyana, but what was obvious, he said, was that she had enemies.
Gcabashe said the writing on the wall was not the first message Magwanyana received from her alleged enemies.
“She lived in a flat in Pietermaritzburg and last month something was burnt in the back of her boot. It is obvious that she had an enemy, we just don’t know who the enemy is.”
Gcabashe said there had been several disputes over Magwanyana’s post to the point that the matter was escalated to the provincial education department.
“There were a lot of people that wanted to be the principal of this school, a lot of people were after the position.”
He said the community was still struggling to come to terms with what happened.
“She was a brilliant teacher and the children loved her. The children were devastated when we informed them about the incident,” said Gcabashe.
KwaZulu-Natal education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said Magwanyana had not reported the threats to the department.

As SA public schools are so dangerous, it's actually child abuse in some cases at least, to send your children there.
