Hi Guys,

I have a laser printer where a toner costs around R1000 and claims to print around 1500 pages.

Just had a look at the new brother ink-jet printers where the cartridges are a fraction of the price and claimed to print over 2000 pages.

For a few rand more than replacing my toner I could get a new printer where cartridges cost be much less or at least that's based on what is advertised

So the question is do the cartridges really last that long?

Stay away from ink-jet printers.

Why?
My samsung laser is great but the toner is R1000 and yields around 1500 pages.
Whereas the brother inkjet cartridges are R199 and claim to print 2400 pages.

So on paper the brother printer wins, but I can't seem to find a decent review or for someone to verify the numbers for me

It depends. I did the exercise a few years ago. A few factors come into play

Amount of pages per month
Colour vs b&w
Cartridge cost / toner cost per page
Paper size. Most people print A4. But if you have a need for A3, it changes the outcome
After sales service
Drum / heads replacement costs

My rule of thumb is: only b&w. Get a laser printer. Low volume colour. Get an inkjet. High volume colour. Get a laser printer. N

Basically I am deciding whether I should buy a new toner or spend a bit more and get a new printer that would be cheaper in the long run.

Its for home use so for the most part low to medium volume B&W it fine with color meaning I don't have to visit the print shop every few months for the odd colour copy
