printer keeps printing test page

I have a HP PSC1500 All-in-One series printer/scanner/copier. I recently replaced the color cartridge and now every time I switch on it prints a test page. The only way I can get it to stop is by pressing cancel. I have scanned the test page as per the instructions on the printed page. I have also done a head alignment which I thought might help although it was not necessary. Could it be because I bought a compatable cartridge (Penguin) not an HP one which was double the price? Now I am wasting double the ink on test pages.

I just managed to solve this by uninstalling the software that came with the printer and then re-installing it. I hope I don't have to do this every time I replace a cartridge as it takes quite a bit of time. This whole thing was a bit waste of time and ink. I won't buy a HP printer again.
