Hi there.

I'm having a battle with myself.

I have a HP Colour Laser CP1215 printer which I am very happy and satisfied with. Except, when I have to buy new toner.
We bought the printer just under a year ago after I had to fork out almost R3 500.00 for 4 new toner cartridges. It was cheaper to buy a new printer with toner than to buy new toner.

Now I am having this very same discussion with myself.
What are you doing? New toner or new printer. To replace all 4 cartridges, will cost me R2 650.00. Is it not better, once again, to buy a newer printer? This printer's younger version will cost me R2 600,00 and it has 4 new cartridges:

I will really appreciate your advice.

I think the toner that comes with the hp printer is not as full as the new toners you buy, i may be wrong but it makes sense to me. Surely hp are not stupid and do not want people buying a new printer everytime. They make their money on toner not printer sales surely? Well the bulk of their money i would imagine.

Ever had a look at these okes who sell toners cheaper? Seems like a good idea even though Hp don't recommend it. I would also not recommend it if meant lost business though :D

IMHO no brainer?? Save R50.0 and get a brand new printer? Go for new printer with a guarantee as well.

My HP 1020 definitely comes with a full cartridge, I bought an extracartridge that came out of another printers box, both did 2500 pages while advertised yield was 2000 pages.

New machines don't come with full toners... That page yield you mention is at 5% coverage so you must have been printing pages with one sentence on them, if that much. :)

I print lots of books, so no not only one sentence. 5% is quite a lot of text. not as much images... Try cartridge hyper, or huge printing consumables (although they have k@k service IME) and get a price on generic cartridges, they usually give the same performance at 40% the price...

I bought refill toner from hong kong for ~R60. Would not suggest going that route, refilling toner is a buggerup...

new printers come with 25% filled cartridges.

I sell all my cartridges and the guy that collect can see a "new printer" cartridge compared to a off the shelf toner and he wont take them as all, as he can't fill them to the brim, apparently thier capacity is alot smaller than off the shelf stuff.

I have several Hp 1100 and the cartridges are costing up to R900 now, so i rather toss and get a new P1005 for R1200 and then the following month the new toners are only R500, so it's cheaper in the long run.

Maybe we should meet up and I show you nicely how you work out 5% coverage of a page. 5% is not a lot of text. I know, been in this industry long enough and I work with a guy that has close to 30 years experience. There's no way in this world that you got 2000 pages printed full text full quality. And printing books on a 1020 is uneconomical and stupid. :) That alone tells me you're the kind that think you're saving yourself a lot by buying a cheapie printer and expecting it to do what the big machines do. :p Not very clever im afraid.
