Prints and printing services?

Hi guys,

I've been requested to quote on (a) the actual photo prints in different sizes and (b) selling the digital files themselves.

Can anyone recommend good printing services in SA or Gauteng which caters for this? Also, what would be a good benchmark/markup to determine pricing for the actual print and the digital file? It is the first time that I've been requested to quote on actual sales and I honestly have no idea how to go about quoting, printing, delivery etc. On the legal side, what happens to my copyright if I sell the digital file. I assume it depends on the agreement, but if I sell the digital file and waive all my rights to the image, there should be a difference in pricing, as opposed to selling a copy of the image, but reserving the right to re-sell it to someone else later?

Some pointers will be highly appreciated.

Are you being commissioned to shoot specific images for a client because if you are by default the copyright belongs to them unless you address that in the contract.

If you do own the copyright then I suggest you license the images to the client for their specific uses. You're really going to want to bite the bullet and consult with a lawyer and have a contract drawn up that you can use as a boilerplate going forward. It will be money well spent imo. Using a generic template that you find online would be a mistake if it's not tailored to SA's rather unusual circumstances.
 
I would suggest you contact Hirt & Carter - theyre the largest digital production house in SA. They have offices in Dbn, Jhb and Cpt and can assist you wherever you are.
