I have a Macintosh machine the connects to the net using the Iburst Desktop modem.
I need to setup an wireless network so that I can connect my laptop via the macintosh using a DLink Wireless Access Point.

Public is the answer to your question, but it is not the answer to your problem.

The connection between your Desktop and Laptop has nothing to do with the Iburst Modem.

It is up to you to set up an IP address (local) on the Network card that attaches to the Access Point. Not sure how it works on the Mac, but in Windows all you have to do is set up a Home Network with Internet Connection Sharing. There is a wizard to do that.
