Private security for NZ at SWC

New Zealand - New Zealand has hired a private security firm to guard its players during this year's World Cup in South Africa, New Zealand Football told local media on Wednesday.

Chief executive Michael Glading told the New Zealand Herald his organisation had engaged a South African contractor whose firm had previously provided security within South Africa for the All Blacks and the Wellington Hurricanes rugby teams.

World Cup organisers have spent an estimated $220 million on security around the Cup and have assured competing teams that every step will be taken to ensure their safety at the tournament. Glading said New Zealand would be among a number of countries which had put in place additional arrangements.

"We have hired a South African to oversee our security," Glading said. "He will link with the security FIFA provide and liaise between them and the team.

"We have hired his company so we are not sure if he will be by himself or comes with an army, but he has a reputation as one of the best in the business," he added. "FIFA are encouraging countries to have their own security as well as what they provide."

New Zealand will be based near Johannesburg throughout the tournament and will fly to the venues of its pool matches against Slovakia, Paraguay and Italy.

Italy and Germany are among nations that have already indicated they will have private security throughout the Cup, and Australia has said it will use "some local resources."

Glading said the use of private contractors was prudent.

"Since the attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team (in Pakistan last year), all sporting teams have to be aware of their security," he said.

"It depends on where you go, but Africa would be one of the main danger areas. It's no great secret that South Africa is a country with a high crime rate so security will be important."

Glading said the New Zealand government might also send a small detachment of police to South Africa to assist in the protection of players, officials and their families.

What a waste ???...Why go into all this trouble for a team that will get raped and murdered in the field of play anyway.???...It's not like they will last longer than a week.

Rather on the pitch than off it.

So you mock them for tacking extra precautions to protect themselves while in one of the most violent countries in the world

There is no crime is South Africa, thats imagination of some whities

Aparently they have always taken the extra precautions with rugby teams. My point is based on the fact that with rugby it makes sense as they normally last for the duration of the tournament. However, with soccer it's a different story as they don't even need to come and camp here, they can fly in, play, lose, fly back home.

Atleast they successfully went through a qualification process, thats more than our joke of a football team is capable of

As I watched the world cup draw and New Zealand was not drawn in our group, I said, "there goes our chances of an easy win".

Is our team getting extra protection considering that unlike our Rugby team we'll be out of the tournament ASAP as well

We'll actually be out the tournament before New Zealand, cause our last game is on the 22nd and theirs is on the 24th :D

Will the NZ footballers be eating out at the same curry joint as the rugby players ?

Sense of humour failure? I think the OP was making a joke about the performance of the team rather than the necessity of security. I applaud them for having the common sense to take precautions, if Pakistan did as much as we're doing about warning about possible dangers those cricketers wouldn't have been shot at.

Hmmm...You don't need to play all three games to get eliminated. Their last game on the 24th will likely be nothing more than a training session.

True :)

But it's likely we'll be in the same boat

Come on, where is your patriotism? :p

Realism. If we play like we did in the Confed cup and get some luck we could make it. The tough game against Uruguay is pivotal. I'm confident we have a decent chance of beating Mexico.

...and of course a big deal gets made out of this in South Africa...

What about France? Cheating aside, I think we might have a shot.
