I run VMware workstation in Vista [actually Ubuntu], and if I don't regularly restart Vista it crawls to a halt, hopefully I will not be stuck with Vista for a whole 12 months

Recently got a HP Laptop with Windows XP installed and it had the same problem, I have since come to the conclusion that HP bloats the OS to the point that it would make DOS look slow on a modern computer.

I simply removed everything, downloaded the respective drivers from whomever made the hardware (IE. I didn't download HP drivers, I directly downloaded nVidia drivers for the Mobo & GFX, etc.), and installed XP from scratch from my own disc (Windows XP SP2 with the latest updates integrated into the OS, using NLite). Now the laptop's running smooth.

EDIT: Also vista sucks, I think your better of waiting for SP1 if you ever wanted to use it (which you clearly don't )

.The thing is that I don't have problems with Firefox - not after unstalling HP's spyware app, and yet Vista seems to think I do have problems with Firefox, call it my own conspiracy theory but I get the distinct impression that M$ don't like the fact that I don't like using IE7 - ergo the annoying popups trying to subliminally convince me that Firefox is evil or something...

Gotta love Microsoft they'll do anything to try and regain the IE7 market share they lost to FF

Gotta love Vista flamers, there no issue with FF on Vista that I have heard of (besides this), maybe if you used it once you could have an opinion :O

I hope you havent used it already, but far too many people will say something like that without having touched it.

Mine doesn't really slow down, but I don't often leave it on through the night anymore... but definitely not slowing to a crawl without regular restarts. Are there any downsides to VMWare, maybe such as this, when running an entire OS through it..

I doubt it is VMware Workstation 6 that causes an entire Windoze OS to crawl to a halt, if that were the case then it doesn't bode well for Vista that it would allow a single application to overtake it and slow it down .

Seriously though, I find that even after I have suspended my Ubuntu dev virtual machine, and closed VMware, that Vista is still sluggish, also Vista uses up most of the memory just for itself - according to the memory usage gadget [which I no longer run as I find it depressing that my 2GB of ram is there only to boot Vista and get a basic desktop to appear on my screen] Vista mostly uses anywhere between 65% and 100% of the memory even when there are no apps running - except the gadget thingy...

I have been running Vista Ultimate since December without any problems. After a month of running without a restart it was as stable as it was when I switched it on.

I am also running Vista Business on my laptop and haven't had a single problem also.

I don't play games, but use the PC and laptop for developing in Visual Studion and MS SQL Server. Can't complain about a thing. Infact, Vista has improved a few things when it came to development...

Edit: Oh and if you can't program in C++ it doesn't help to have the source code for Linux or FF or any open source piece of software... Linux has got a whole heep of problems itself. I would rather pay for a piece of software and know its supported and regular updates will be made available than not pay and know that if there is a problem on the software you will be stuck with it...Stupid Linux!!!!!
