Just thought I should put this thread in here for the benefit of new users, and give them an easy to use reference.

There are known problems with the Marconi ADSL Modem (Telkom supplied).

* This router is broken (by design)
* It should not be used as a router but as a modem. (as telkom seems to want you to use it)
* If used as a router (the reason you pay for it) it overheats and crashes.
* If used as a router it does not handle LCP(line control protocol) requests well and crashes.

Thanks to ezanolin for summarising this.

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any real solution to this one. I don't even think a firmware update will help, so we may just have to grin and bear it.

What I have instituted that really seems to have helped a lot is forcing a disconnect at specfic times

This is on linux

where root:root is username:password ( default) I changed mine of course

lynx -source -auth=root:root 'http://192.168.10.200/cgi-bin/pd.exe'

I put this into a script and run it off the crontab twice a day

I believe the router hangs when telkom try disconnect you to reassign you a new IP. So when you force an update telkom don't reassign this. Thats my theory seems to be working well

Its been 5 days no router hanging but who knows. Try it out and let me know if you have success

I do a similar thing with two resets in the early hours of the morning and I have had no hangs at all since then.

The new firmware made my modem hang more than before. I called Telkom about this - they said they tested my line (I have no idea why test the line when the modem is at fault) and all of a sudden, after a few days, the modem stopped hanging. Has been fine since then.

Hello,

I've been trying to get the new firmware from Telkom but they keep telling me they are still testing. where did you get it, any chance of a download location etc etc ?

Rig

Telkom does supply the firmware upgrade. But there are known problems with the upgrade where it makes the modem hang. So it's possible they've stopped supplying the upgrade until they've sorted out the problem.

Switched from the marconi router to the netgear. My word what a difference. The netgear never hangs its management interface is so much slicker. And it cost me about the same price as the telkom one and included a serious firewall not just plain old NAT as well as WiFI.
Curse Telkom and their useless router.
