Hey guys

Recently I've been having serious problems with my router. But let me start from the beginning.

I was on an MWEB ADSL account (Reason : I worked for MWEB), but since May, I moved over to a Telkom ADSL Account (Reason : I work for them now, but before you start hating, I resigned 2 weeks ago).

Anyways, ever since my move to Telkom, my router has been dropping its connection. If i visit the Router IP, ie: http://10.0.0.2, the status of the connection is "Cable Disconnected"

After a few seconds, it'll connect again, but as soon as I try to access a site, the error returns. "Cable Disconnected"

I've contaced Telkom, and their excuse is, the cable between my PC, and the router is faulty. I tell them bull *****, because howcome I can go to the router IP, if the cable is not working? If I access my router wireless, I get the same error.

Is this happening to anyone else, or did this happen to you, and is the problem with the telephone line, like I think it is? Please don't ask me to call Telkom. Please, don't make me do that...

I had a similar problem....it was a line problem. Call Telkom :-)

Dude you worked for Telkom and MWEB. lol. At least you resigned.

What router do you have?

Its a Telkom Marconi Router Premium device.
I don't have a screenshot of the error right now. I'll post it tonight once I get home.(If I can get a connection that is)

try a different modem to be sure. Thats a really old one you have

There's nothing wrong with the old marconi - they are rock solid. I've had netgears, a linksys, mega 100 & 105's, xyxel and 2 billions over the years. The old battleaxe marconi is the only survivor. It has endured lightning, eskom loadshedding, dropping from my desk umpteen times, and a thousand different configs. It never has a problem syncing, even on a bad line, and downloads constantly at over 40 kbps on my 384 line. It's been a loan router to friends and clients, and has never once missed a beat. In short, don't knock something just because it's old. ;)

Edit: By the way, the 'cable unplugged' message (if on the router) is referring to the phone cable, not the ethernet cable. The router is losing sync with the exchange. This can be the line (telkom's problem) or the filters as someone mentioned above, or the surge protection in the transformer gone for a loop. Try removing filters and running your phone cord direct from the wall to the router, bypassing the surge protector, and see if the problem persists. If yes, then call telkom to come and check your line (which is what I said @ post # 3 :) )

try the following for xp
start->control pannel->nework connections
check local area connection icon if it says network cable unpluged then telkom tech was correct

if u check the cables but it still says network cable unpluged try this
Start->run type "cmd" in the box and click ok a black window appears type in that window "ping 127.0.0.1" if no reply's then its ur network card thats faulty if reply's then modem or cable faulty try a different ports on the modem and see if that resolves the problem

There are are things that could be wrong but then I will need to type an essay just report back on this then I will tell whats else could be wrong;)

p.s. pm me if this is too confusing

The network cable is not the problem. I'm able to ping the router (10.0.0.2) and I'm able to access the router's interface, so the network cable is not the problem.

So the "cable" which the error message is refering to, must be the exchange cable.

I'll do some of the tests tonight, and get back to you guys

Thanks

Hi Everyone.

So I found the source to my problem. It was my router. If the router was not active, the connection would be held. As soon as I made a request to any page, then it would cut out for a few seconds.

Today I purchased a brand new router, and so far, 100% up.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the feedback - feedback is good. We like feedback. So few do it. I'm sad for your old Marconi, though. They are becoming rather like the dinosaurs these days I guess.

Was the same on my side. I phoned Telkom every day for more than a week, the tested the line, changed me to a different port, everything. At the end I tried another modem, problem solved. Was also a Telkom Marconi.
