HI there guys,

After reading most of the threads i have realized that i have made some bad decisions on my ADSL. I say this because i took a ADSL 512 meg bundle with telkom.

First they did'nt tell me that i needed microfilters. which i eventually bought today. I have plugged them in. I have a telkom cordless gateway (Make is INVENTEL) I have my Laptop and my desktop linked straight to it.

Now my laptop is getting me great speads all the time. It is at least allowing me to browse websites and to download files. My desktop on the other hand is not letting me browse pages and is downloading at a very low speads. that is if i get any speed at all.

I don't know what to do.I am not the technically minded person to know what is wrong.

Both the laptop and the pc run directly into the gateway. My brother keeos telling i need a proxy but both mweb and telkoms people have said i dont need one as the gatway is always connected to the internet. Or something like that.

CAN ANYONE ASSIST ME IN MY DILLEMA!

if your pc and laptop is configured the sameway to access your gateway, they both should work similar.

I suspect a virus on your desktop machine, do you notice after a reboot you can browse a bit and then everything just time out? Helped a client who had this issue on his windows xp box and ended up reinstalling, cause the virus was removed but it still had some traces somewhere and reinstalling fixed that.

Only suggestion i have for you at this time of the morning ;-)

512 mb adsl???
whered you get that from ;)

Most probably a virus/spyware on that machine.

The reason you would get slow speeds is that the virus is probably using most of your bandwidth to send the entire contents of your hard drive to it's creator...or something like that :P

I suggest you make use of one of the online virus scan facilities first...try www.avg.com, look for the online scan links.

Next, get a spyware remover like SpyBot - google for it, download, update it an then run it. Tell it to Fix anything it finds...

Next, make sure your antivirus software is functioning and is up to date!
If you don't have a decent antivirus, you will get p'wned...I'm using Avast at the moment.
Norton Antivirus sucks - in my opinion - it slows your machine down a lot and misses viruses too often.

Next get a personal firewall - Sygate Personal Firewall is good and free. You will need to "teach" the firewall which programs are allowed to access the web at first.
Firewalls prevent your machine from being hacked via the internet network.

Do all the above on both your machines, and you will be a lot safer...if your connection is still slow, then its something else most likely.

Thanks guys

Let me try it out and get back to you.

And oh yes it was early in the morning that is the reason for the 512mb ADSL.

One can only but dream of heaven at this stage.\

Your pc is not configured to get it's IP Address from the Router.
i.e. Network Settings -> Network Card -> TCPIP -> Obtain IP Addrerss Automatically.

If that is untrue, then try disabling the windows firewall.
