Hi All

Ok here is my problem. I have a pc which I added a second drive. Formatted and used it for a day or so, then i logon to the pc and it tells me the drive needs to be formatted
So I cut my losses and put another drive in and format and copy work to it, not more than a few hours later the same thing happens!!!
Now I have tried reloading the pc and trying IDE and SATA drives and the same thing happens!
Funny that the drive that has the OS on it is working fine...

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks

I forgot to mention when I look under disk management the drive is now partitioned into 2.
I am using windows xp.

My first guess would be a loose / faulty cable, but then you installed another drive, so now the loose part is not my favorite guess, unless the cable is loose on the part that plugs into the motherboard.

Second guess is the drive controller, obviously the first drive is working 100%, so that channel on the controller seems 100% ok, so compare the drivers running the channels, if the drivers match up then upgrade them anyway. Be very careful now as there is a chance that the primary channel can now fail and you could end up not reading the first disk anymore. Blah.

Third guess is 2 faulty drives. It does happen. Are they perhaps MAXTOR's? Try running the primary drive on the second channel and see if it works. This will eliminate the controller and the cable as a problem as well.

Be carefull a faulty driver or hardware drive controller can damage the original drive too!
