Hi,

(sorry,for my english:)

I need to help with settings of network for sharing internet connection to clients PCs.

Scheme:
Internet---DSL modem Vigor318 USB---Server---Switch---5 Clients

What would be settings when I want to use ICS?

OS Windows XP
Server: 1 network adapter for LAN , internet connection via USB
Clients: 1 network adapter

Switch:16port

If is possible create an network bridge?

Any help would be much apprecieted.THX

Owner of firm won´t buy anything..so I have to work only with this what I have now:(

In my experience it a really simple exercise:
The "properties" dialog box for the adsl connection on the server has a tick box "allow other computers to share this connection" - tick it.
Then make sure all the other computers on the network are set to "automatically obtain IP address (DHCP)" in their TCP/IP properties.
That single tick box sets up your routing, DHCP server and everything and all the client machines should just find the path automatically - no other settings required. Windows can be really easy (when it works  )

Yes, using the ICS tickbox in the Sharing tab in Properties works fine. Just remember that you will have to set the MTU setting on each of the clients because some sites may not work over the PPPOE network with the Windows default of 1500. The most important is Windows Update. I don't remember offhand what the correct setting is, but if you search the forums for MTU you should find it.

Huh  correct me if i'm wrong but the ICS functions exactly the same as an NAT/router - therefore only the server box needs its MTU checked cause it repacks all the packets anyway

Re:1

I did some experiment today and still don´t work....

I want to create network bridge, but it won´t to create cause it wants two connections as you said...and I have two connections!?
1st: external DSL modem connected to PC through USB
2st: network adapter (on board)

so why i can´t create bridge (when I selected two connections option Create Network Bridge isn´t aviable)

current settings:

SERVER:
LAN:
IP - 192.168.0.1 (set when I enabled ICS)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Workgroup:OFFICE (set throught Netwok Connection Wizard)

Internet:
Internet connection sharing Enabled(ICS)
IP: obtain automat. (given from ISP)
DNS: obtain automat. (given from ISP)

(also set server as computer through which other computers connecting to internet)

CLIENTS:
DHCP - enabled
IP - obtain automat. (also tried 192.168.0.2 - 6)
Gateaway: - (also tried 192.168.0.1)
DNS -obtain automat.
Workgroup:Office

(also set client as computer which are connecting to internet through other computer)

but there is a little problem:
- when I enable ICS on server and set all IP´s to obtain automat. or define static IPs -> I can´t see all computers together in Office workgroup!!

- just in one case I saw just one client and also server.I checked connection with ipconfig /all on this pc and everything was OK
DHCP enabled - YES
IP: 192.168.0.51
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateaway: 192.168.0.1
DNS server: 192.168.0.1

I mean that ICS and DHCP server was successfull...

after that in internet Options set new connection as Broadband connection (DSL,LAN)

run Internet Explorer and nothing bonk

after restart it was all gone!!!....

I don´t know how,but IP was set to 164.194..... and subnet mask to 255.255.0.0....DHCP server disabled....after restart all clients PCs I saw all computers in Office workgroup think ,but they all have IP 164.194...

I did everything again,but I still getting IP 164.194...

I don´t know whats next?

Doesn´t have switch static IP?
(1st port etc.10.0.0.1 ,2nd port 10.0.0.2 and so on)

It´s different between IP 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1?

Any help would be much apprecieted.THX

Your post has confused me - i'm not sure about the terminology that you are using.

You talk about setting up a bridge - now the more common name for a server used to share a single broadband connection with multiple computers is an NAT or router...

If you using internet connection sharing - this bridge/NAT/router is setup automatically by windows and you do not need to do anything further.

(also set server as computer through which other computers connecting to internet)
What do you mean by this??

after that in internet Options set new connection as Broadband connection (DSL,LAN)
was this on the client or the server - i think you may be confusing 2 different methods of implementation. If you're using ICS - there is nothing you need to set on the clients. You only need to set up connections on the clients in the case of a dial up - where the clients will ask the server to dial up.

I don´t know how,but IP was set to 164.194..... and subnet mask to 255.255.0.0....DHCP server disabled....after restart all clients PCs I saw all computers in Office workgroup think ,but they all have IP 164.194...
Don't know how you managed that

I can´t see all computers together in Office workgroup!!
This is unfortunately a side effect of the way that windows detects the other computers in a workgroup. It can take up to 2 hours from boot up for every computer to become fully aquainted with its neihbours - just leave all the machines on and they've eventually find each other (as long as you sort out your dhcp)

1. Don't use bridge.
2. make sure that your server's IP address is 192.168.0.1
3. open network connections (use control panel)
4. right click on your internet setting on the server
4. click advanced tab.
5. click alow other users to connect thru this ...
