Problem with G5 shutting down

I am having a problem shutting down my G5.

When I click shutdown, it looks like it logs out of the user account. And then logs back in again without shutting down. I have tried restarting and shutting down from the Apple menu, and both do the same thing. The only way to shut down is to manually hold down the power button.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? Is it a corrupt file somewhere causing it to do this?

I resolved it by starting up from the OS disc, and doing a disk repair.

Repairing permission from disk utility might have had the same result.
