Hope someone can help - so far MWeb can't and we're waiting for Telkom to respond. We've just switched our MWeb account to ADSL using their "free" 7401VGP VoIP Billion router and it hasn't been 100% problem free. We can only get a stable ADSL connection today when one of our phones is in use - i.e. we have to get a dialling tone and leave it off hook. If we disconnect the phone, the ADSL light keeps flashing and we lose connection. Yesterday, when we first set it up, it worked the other way around - only had a connection when the phone was not in use but ADSL was lost when the phone was answered. Obviously this is not a setup we would like permanently. Can anyone offer any advice to normalise the phone/ADSL setup - we are complete experts!

I may be stating the obvious but have you checked to make sure your phones connected via the ADSL filters or if they working properly?

We have tried with and without the supplied filter. We even tried connecting from another point in the house, where the line enters at a different place for the bedroom and lounge extension phones. The phones are all working fine. One is a normal phone, the other two are cordless. BTW, sorry, there was a typo in my original message - I meant to say we are complete amateurs not experts!

As suggested, it sounds like a [searchforum]microfilter[/searchforum] problem, best to unplug all telephone devices - handsets, fax machines, modems, etc from the ADSL line - including devices attached to any extensions. Then attach the ADSL router directly to the line - a microfilter should never be used between the ADSL router and the telephone wall jack, if the ADSL connection is stable, then it was a problem with microfilters not being used properly inbetween the ADSL line and one or more analogue devices.

PS: tess, welcome to MyBroadband :).

Thanks for all the advice, sorry I couldn't reply earlier. This is a mystery. The router is connected directly to the line, where the line enters that part of the house(study) from the telkom pole - there's nothing inbetween. I really suspect it may be to do with how Telkom have wired up the whole thing into the house, splitting the line in two at the pole, but as I said before, we are definitely amateurs. My husband is convinced it's a settings issue in the software provided but I can't see where any changes could be made. Will also try various other combinations later after work. Will be interesting to see what Telkom have to say, if and when they pay us a visit. I'm writing this with the phone off the hook and the connection is fast and stable. It's still better than dial up days!! Many thanks again!

Hi, again. Am happy to report I've got it all working now. I disconnected the phones as advised and then tried swapping filters one by one and located the problem - I thought my husband had done all this yesterday but he was not looking for the simple solution. Will have to buy another filter. Feeling rather stupid! Thanks again I'd better phone Telkom and cancel the fault!

I'm glad you sorted the problem out. You could have waited forever for Telkom and then they would have the cheek to charge you an absorbent call-out fee.
Most times the problem is very simple and it's the last thing we think of.

:D

Faulty microfilters are not unusual - unfortunately, but a bigger problem is lightning and other electrical surges, if you don't have surge protection for both your line as well as for the ADSL router's transformer to plug into, I strongly recommend getting surge protection - something like the Clearline multiplug for computer equipment.
