I am having problems with Preview and Snow Leopard.

I can use Quick View to view jpeg files, but when I open them with preview. It does not display the correct image. It just displays a gray block.

The only way to resolves this is to delete the preview prefernce files, and then it works. But after a couple of restarts it goes back to not displaying the correct image.

Has anyone else had this problem, and how have they resolved it?

Sorry mate, that sounds really weird! Never had that problem. Post this in the Apple forums or www.macrumors.com, both these sites have helped me a lot with strange queries. Preview is awesome though :) Pity you're having issues :p

Have you repaired permissions on the drive?

Yip. I think it has to with the colour profile. I just used Graphic Converter to resave the file and all is fine.

I noticed that it does it with CMYK files specifically.

Seen this with extensis portfolio before. JPG and cmyk won't display. Adjust the colorspace, if you need cmyk convert to pdf.

Yeah I had this problem , a sector of the image doesn't render at all in Preview leaving a grey block. It's some sort of bug that occurs occasionally for me.

Yes, I have repaired the permissions. This does not help. It happens with any jpeg, not just CMYK.

I am still having a problem with Preview and Snow Leopard.

I have done the following, and still no luck:

Repaired disk permissions
deleted Preview preference files
Deleted Preview, and installed again from System Discs using Pacifist
Setup another use, and tested from new user, with same problem

Any other ideas?

When I setup the Macbook, it was a migration from an older Macbook. So I am worried something was pulled across that is giving the problem.

I have done migrations from other Mac's to 10.6 with no problem, so it must be something else.

Any help will be much appreciated.

It's clearly a bug in Preview and Snow Leopard. What can I say? Use some other image viewing software. There are tons for the Mac.

There comes a point when you've expended more effort than the task is worth. At this stage I'd do a Time machine backup, format, then a clean install of the OS. Then use the Migration Assistant to get my apps and other user data back.

Thanks Bwana,

What I am worried about is if I do a migration assistant again after a clean install, won't it pull the problem back?

Well if it's a bug in Preview and Snow Leopard, a re-install won't help. It might be cause by Entourage (do you run office?)

Otherwise there's not really much you can do. I think I've seen the same thing with my Hackintosh. Zooming in on the image cleared the grey block for me.
